There is another thread where there is a "discussion" going on about possible changes being made to the forum.

Please vote here to tell us if you would like to see some modifications to the styles/smilies/other stuff to the forum.

Please also list what you would like to see changed (if Yes), or any reasons you might have if you don't want any changes (No).

The poll will run for 12 days to cover a week and a couple of weekends to give everyone a chance to vote (depending on when they have time to check in on the forum).

First vote, w00h00! Hrm, guess that was predictable.

Potential changes I'd like to see, in no particular order:
  • Replace existing smilies with IPB style smilies, or add the entire set again on obscure tags so they don't conflict with existing smilies.
  • Add more smilies, and implement a monitored thread or forum for suggestions whereby users can propose, and even vote on, submitted smilies.
  • Add additional themes, both "canned" and user created (not very likely here, unless we have some closet phpBB coders in the house?). Perhaps after implementing them have an officially unofficial vote to reset the default theme. Again, as above, implement a thread or forum whereby such suggestions/requests will be noticed and acknowledged by the administration.
  • Look into some small code modifications for the forum such as auto resized IMG tags, and the more advanced code box tag (to avoid line wrap problems).
  • Expand the signature size character limit, and add to the rules that abusing it by loading umpteen bajillion images isn't allowed. The user base here isn't exactly full of troublemakers, I doubt it'd be an issue.
  • Integrate a chat application on the site that ties to the IRC room so that 1) users can find it without knowing IRC, 2) it's awareness is increased, and 3) it adds features to the forums. I know it can be done, I set it up and had it working myself. (Though it is much easier if you...)
  • Convert to SMF so that you don't have to worry about the last 3 list items (all of those features and more are built in). This one is a pipe dream, there's way too much involved. You asked though.

Oh yeah, and my smilies are cooler than your smilies.

PS: 2% of your forum are belong to me.

Well, I agre with Jerwa although I like the blue theme we have. There are a lot of forums that don't change it because it is pleasant to the eye, and posts can easily be read.

More smilies, I definitely agree.

NO changes required.

The best part of this forum is the participants, not the smilies, so I'm happy as it is, even if it was black and green with pink buttons.

The more time you spend working out the details, the less time you have to be silly.

I wouldn't mind seeing more smilies, but other than that I am happy with the forum the way it is. I enjoy the banter we have back and forth with each other & do miss some of the people that seemed to have gone missing (maybe just for the summer & warm months - hopefully).

I also do think that the admins have done a good job. Thankfully the admin hats have gotten dusty because we have a bunch of good people here that know (mostly) where the line is and don't cross it (too often Wink ).

I think some fresh smilies wouldn't hurt anybody. Cool

Also, I'd like to get hot and cold running Jello installed for the hot tub. Razz

For someone that has given up on changes, JerWA certainly has lots of interesting ideas ...

Bacon. We definitely need more bacon! And Jello.

I'm not a big fan of themes, but I can see how some people might like them. As I recall, previous efforts to add themes didn't meet with much interest. If someone is willing to do the work to set them up, I certainly have no objection.

I OBJECT!!! (No I don't ... sorry, I panicked)

In keeping with the spirit of this forum, every other line is a serious suggestion.

No they are not! Razz

You object to hot and cold running Jello?

The only use for a tub full of Jello (that I can think of and am about to get in trouble for) is wrestling...and you have to get the ladies to agree to it first (the wrestling, not the tub).

I voted yes, although the poll is sort of misleading.

There will be no change, only additions.

The old style for the forum will still be there, and should be default.

The old smileys will still be there, so if you don't want to use the new ones you don't have to.

There will (unfortunately Razz ) be no change in content, not even in the Gorge... Rolling Eyes

Converting to SMF will not happen.

Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Trying to have a serious conversation here about a serious topic is like trying to explain calculus to a cat while wearing a catnip suit and standing in a wading pool of milk.

I have tried to explain calculus to cat while giving it catnip. I think the cat understands it easier when it has had some catnip beforehand.

It's a cat performing calculus on an abacus with its nipples.

Serious and supportive comments were made, isn't that enough?

It looks like that cat is taking a cat nap instead of learning or getting exercise. What all serious threads need is a good does of the pancake bunny :

Why do I get the distinct feeling you have tried that? Confused

I think Mildew hit it on the head (as for what will happen around here).

Might I recommend that a thread be created for people to post their smiley addition recommendations. Since I have no idea how people go about compiling a list to add to a forum, I recommend that if someone is posting a smiley, display it as an image then give the url for it.

OK, OK, OK....I'll make the thread now...... #ni-1

I don't have a massive amount of time to contribute but if some changes start happening and you need a bit of coding time the auto-sizing of images should be a pretty simplistic change.
