The fire situation looks really bad over there from what I've seen on the news. How is it where you are? I hope your family and friends are all safe, and that the wonderfully heroic firefighters manage to get the fires under control.
They said on the news that most of the fires are believed to have been started by arsonsists. I hope they catch them all and punish them well for the senseless destruction they're causing. It was so sad to see the despair on the faces of the people who have lost their homes and crops. _________________ My brain hurts.

Unfortunately, it is common practice to start fires in rural Greece, they do it to enable them to re zone the land, very illegal, but then they rarely get caught. |

I PM'ed her yesterday about this and she said she is ok & not that close to the fires. I also was concerned when I heard about the fires. She was the first one I thought of.....of course shoe is also the only person I know over there too, so she would be the first by default. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Thanks everybody for the concern. Fortunately, I am in Athens, and not in danger from the fires. Unfortunately, a large part of the beautiful forests of Pelopponese is lost from the fires...
Someone tried to initiate a fire in a small mountain which is located in Athens, but it was quickly extinguished and did not manage to get a hold (fortunately).
Some of the fires are not very far from Athens, just less than a 100 km, and we've had red skies, the smell of smoke and ash everywhere in Athens.
Situation of Greece in general because of the many fires is very bad. The Fire department is not equipped to handle such a huge situation, and frankly, I don't think any fire department in the world really is. More than 50 fires rage across Greece, and I am at a loss for words. There is nothing I can do for now. Even if I went there to try and help, I am neither an expert fireman nor a nurse or anyone that know how to handle a situation like this, and I would create more problems for the authorities than any help I could give.
I just hope the fires are extinguished quickly, and the perpetrators caught and sentenced. Even a death sentence (which has been abolished in Greece) sounds too good for people who do not just put a fire, but destroy oxygen - producing forests, villages and crops. In some of these woods and forests there are a number of endemic species, species that are found only in Greece and nowhere else. _________________

My mom always said there was nothing worse than a Greece fire.
Glad you are safe, T. but I'm sure that can't be said for everyone. Setting all those fires sounds like a terrorist act to me. _________________ 0.0 Giggly hertzes Folding!

A quick word of advice, do what they have been advising people here in NYC for the last (almost) 6 years. Pack a Go bag. A bag that has essentials in it, some clothes, little food, water, travel papers, cash, credit cards, ID, a list of phone #'s and other contact info in it. This way (God forbid) if you have to go in a hurry you can just grab the bag and get the hell out of there.
They also advise that you set up a meeting destination or person (not in the area) to have as a contact, to contact to leave status reports with so no one else in the family is in a panic if you are delayed in getting to the meeting destination.
Are there any area near you that could be burned? _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!
