I am sure this is not really a new topic, but the problem keeps cropping up in an number of projects. I have had it in SETI for a while, so I have no contact at all there, but the most recent occurrence is in Climateprediction (which I just reattached to) and it is so frustrating because I get the message that it is trying to send a trickle message - but I do not get the credits!

Any other active projects? My SETI has been acting up all day, and I'm not on CPDN any more so I don't know if you just have bad luck with projects being down or what.

Yes, having problems with PrimeGrid, Proteins, LHC - none of them seem able to connect. Also ABC and the new eternity2. But the HTTP internal server error message only comes up with Climateprediction and SETI.

Well, Proteins is down (I can't even get their web page right now), SETI is acting up, and I'm not on the other 2 hehe.

What messages are you getting from LHC, Grid, Proteins, ABC, etc? Can you get to their websites?

Edit: I checked my logs and despite tons of file transfer failures, I have no HTTP errors for SETI.

Do you have a proxy/gateway defined?

When I check disk, I see that some of these problem projects show 0 bytes, yet I do have accounts which I can access showing credits and all other information seems normal. Just cannot connect to the "problem" projects. Here is a recent message:24/08/2007 10:14:41 AM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user

I have just tried to switch to proxy server. Maybe that'll do something?

Setting the proxy shouldn't fix anything unless it's required, it was more to see if anything was defined in there in the first place (which would likely break everything if it wasn't needed and/or setup properly).

It sounds like you can get to those projects sites from the machine(s) in question, right? If so, it's not a general connectivity problem.

I would check for...
1) Software firewalls on your machine like ZoneAlarm, McAfee Internet Suite, etc, and disable them, then try forcing an update. If it doesn't work, turn the firewall back on.

2) Reboot the PC and try again.

3) Hardware firewalls/routers. If no configuration options have changed in them recently, just try rebooting them (including the modem). The default mode for pretty much every SOHO/Home router/firewall/modem should allow all outbound traffic and appropriate replies, so there's nothing you should have to configure to make BOINC itself work.

If, after those 3, you still can't connect, I'd try...

4) Reinstall BOINC on top of your existing install. I've done it, it maintains all of your user/account/project information, so you won't lose anything. Backing up first is always a good choice however.

5) Try signing up for a new project.

If, after all 5, you still can't connect... let me know and I'll figure out what's next hehe.

Thanks JerWa for all your trouble, even though so far nothing has worked. I did attach to another project (not a very important one) called BURP. I got attached without any problem and received work immediately. The project now appears to be running perfectly.
But CPDN keeps giving me the HTTP internal server routine, so does SETI.
Really would like to get CPDN going again, as I have already 21000 plus there.

Did you reinstall BOINC? The HTTP error is usually server side, but other people should be getting it too if you are.

The only other thing I can think of would be to reset one of the projects and maybe reattach.

I don't know why all of those projects would be having issues and not the new one you attached to unless the problem is with the existing software. If all else fails, try detaching from one of the projects and then go to the BOINC software directory, remove the folder for that project, and then reattach. It will download the client app for that project again, and that's really the only thing you haven't done.

If that still doesn't work, the only other thing I can even think of would be to go to the project websites in question and ask them what to do.

OK, for what it is worth: I detached every single project that had given me trouble of one kind of another (there were at least six or seven). Then I attached again to Climateprediction and SETI, but as a new user this time! It still did not work the first time around (kept getting the HTTP error), but after repeating a number of times (twice in the case of CPDN, three or four times in the case of SETI - I'm a stubborn sob) I now have both of these running and contacting project without difficulty. Here's hoping it will stay that way!

Spoke too soon: the HTTP error is back in SETI and I cannot upload result. Guess I will just give up!

I don't know if SETI is the best benchmark, given that the project has been down (even if only for a few hours each time) at least three times in the last 10 days.

You are right. I will leave it sitting in Transfers for a couple of days and see what happens. Also, tomorrow should tell the tale if CPDN is running OK now. Will let you know.

Make that 4 times, I have a SETI WU stuck in transfer again myself.

Final chapter! Both CPDN and SETI gave me the same HTTP problem again, so I detached, for good this time. However, out of sheer curiosity I decided to try SETI again with a different email address and different password. I became User, nothing else. The work unit (a good 20 hours) ran nicely for a day or so, in statistics the line was drawn from Aug 26 to 29; BUT then came upload time and here is what happened:
29/08/2007 5:10:46 PM|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Temporarily failed upload of 11fe07ae.4425.21749.16.5.118_0_0: http error

So there is a problem somewhere and it must be in SETI. I wish them much luck but they will not have me to kick around anymore...

SETI@home 8/29/2007 7:16:10 AM Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

It's a fairly normal thing with SETI, and with all projects given long enough. SETI is the poster child for problems because it is, by far, the most actively participated in project. More than 600,000 active users means that SETI is dealing with issues in the code base that most projects will never even have to deal with. I don't see what dropping the project is supposed to accomplish.

OK, I can leave it sitting in transfers, but I am not going to try another wu before I get credit for this one. It is the upload, not the download that is the problem. As I started with SETI many, many years ago when I was still in Canada (do not know what happened to those credits), I do have a particular affinity for this project so I hope things will straighten themselves out.

Every project has issues sooner or later. They're run on a shoe string budget, by only a handful of people, on networks and machines usually donated to them. We're volunteers, it's not like it's hurting us when SETI is being spastic, and there are plenty of other projects to keep your machines working if you're worried about idle time. For what it's worth, SETI sorted itself out again on my machines, but now Spinhenge is broken, and I have 15 WUs stuck trying to upload. Just can't let it bug you, it's nothing personal, it's not like they're snickering about denying letting you help them on a project. They WANT our help hehe.
