I'm looking to buy a new CPU...would LOVE an Alienware! But way out of my price range...looking at either the Gateway~Gateway Desktop PC (GT5408)

PLEASE check Best Buy or Frys and see if they have comparable systems. After the shafting Circuit City attempted to pull with the Divx players they shouldnt be allowed to recover.

All I can say is, since I read this: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html, I will NEVER buy or install Vista. Some further research that I did to substantiate the claims of a large performance hit of Vista vs XP were confirmed in an article I found on Extreme PC where they compared an XP clean install to a Vista upgrade (on top of the XP clean install) to a Vista clean install. In all but the lowest resolution on one of the games, XP beat the stuffing out of Vista, on the exact same box. This is often attributed to bad DX10 drivers, and if you read the white paper linked above, you'll see how Vista does things like check every 30 ms to see if so-called "premium" content is being played, so it can purposefully shut of your SPDIF and degrade the quality of your video if you are, but haven't passed DRM muster.
This is scary. The white paper also tells the story of a guy that had shot a lot of film over the course of decades, had it burned on DVDs, and then couldn't play them on his own computer because Vista couldn't find a Macrovision decoder. The disks played fine on free-standing DVD players, but he couldn't play his own content on his own computer because Vista wouldn't let him.
All that aside, right now, comparable Core 2 Duos are faster than AMDs (I hate to have to say that, because I'm an AMD guy). Someone that knows more about C2D model numbers than I do will have to tell you if that's the case in this instance. In fact the C2D might be enough faster than the AMD to make up for all the resources that Vista hogs, if you really must have Vista.

E4300's aren't that impressive. That X2 4600 is probably faster.
If you're looking for cheap Core 2's, go to the Dell Outlet and look up XPS410s. E6300 based systems start around $500.
$529.00 - XPS 410 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 1860 (E6300) - Genuine Windows Vista Business - 80 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) - 1 GB RAM - CD/RW DVD Combo - 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
Same as above $549 for 160 GB hdd, $569 for 250 GB, $589 for 320 GB.
$729.00 - XPS 410 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2130 (E6400) - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium - 250 GB EIDE SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM) - 2GB RAM - DVD/RW - 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro
These are all right off their search page, and there are several instances of each machine for sale. The good thing about Dell is that all of these come with warranties and clean installs, so there's no worries about gremlins from the computers past.
I don't know what price range you're looking at, but I can't find any decent systems for anywhere near that price anywhere else.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
I'm not hot on Vista either, however I just...and do mean just, upgraded from my beloved Millennium Edition to Windows XP and now my computer is crap...no sound, Quick Time won't play, and it was a borrowed copy and now have 11 days before it won't let me operate anymore because it has all ready been registered...
So I figure with all the problems I'm having I might as well bite the bullet and just buy a new system for the next 7-10 years or so...don't have the money to waste, but with only 11 days left I have to do something...and no sound sucks!
I have a Gateway Pentium 4 something or other...I do know that my hard drive only has about 35% or so left with free space, and that's only because I just uninstalled and deleted the Millennium Edition from my computer to save room...now I'm stuck with only a few days left before I can't use my computer anymore!
HELP!!!!

Thanks for that informative article Sir Lloyd. I'm not as enthusiastic for Vista as I was for XP when it came out. I'm not sure if I'll use it for my new machine or not. Part of me says yes, do it, and part of me says no, keep XP and be safe.
Nice machines you guys have. I'll be away 'til about early or mid next month and I'll have a quad rig set up by then. I decided to go with the quad to help us with our standings a little. Xeons would of took up too much space on my desk.

Na, a heap of junk is what I've got. How much does a new PC cost in the States, or in China or India?? I must get some more crunching power but remain alive at the same time...THE WIFE is one of those anti-Tech people who doesn't realize that you need to put batteries into a flashlight for it to work... so she won't let me spend our hard-earned cash on what she considers to be a complete waste of time, but for me is of enormous importance. Bloody Luddite!!

You're welcome (belatedly), A/C Hope you found something that worked for you.
Speaking of Xeons, my "ServerBeast" would pretty much take up an an entire desk (provided you didn't break or rupture something putting it there). Or perhaps just break the desk. 
The thing is, between the capacious (for their time) 1mB cache/CPU, Windows Server 2003 (which is supposed to be good at SMP), and the luntatics.at optimized app, that monster is shrubbing SETI WU's a lot faster than it has any rights to, and it does them four at a time.
