|
|
I have been having a conversation with JerWA and mohrorless in the Boinc'ers forum and it has been suggested that we ( as in All Knights ) list what projects we shrub for and Why. This list could be used by new and existing Knights to help them decide which projects to shrub for. I myself have had a hard time choosing new projects as I can't tell what they are for.
So If you have a pet project this is the place to sell it. Who, What, When, Where & Why so to speak. Even if it is to say " It gives the most credit for my old PIII."
Perhaps someone ( defiantly not me ) could edit it and make a nice chart to use to decide on projects. To my knowledge there is no single place anywhere on the web with such information. This should include Boinc as well as non-Boinc applications.
Ps: If the list is user friendly enough it just may be used as a guide for many, and may bring us more Knights as well. _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

This is a very good topic and I think it should be made sticky.
I have always been interested in astronomy and physics, especially quantum mechanics. This is why I want to help any astronomy projects and physics projects there are. Unfortunately, I do not currently have the resources to shrub every project I would like to, so I have had to make some choices.
I have been shrubbing SETI since the beginning, before BOINC, having stopped when I changed PCs and had some bad personal stuff happen to me. I always believed that there are other intelligent beings in the universe, so I shrub both SETI and SETI Beta. Some of the processing is also used for astronomical purposes, since some detected pulses come from natural sources, such as pulsars etc.
Einstein: it is one of the most interesting astronomy projects, to find pulsars. Pulsars are stars at the last stage of their lives, and can tell us a lot about our galaxy, evolution of stars etc.
LHC: It doesn't have much work at the moment but it is a good project. It has to do with physics and especially quantum physics; the Large Hadron Collider, when it is ready, will be able to help in the understanding of quantum physics, and the behavior of subatomic particles.
Pirates: that is just for fun! Seriously, I liked the name, went to the project page, and since they are a trial project, thought I would help. They have little work at the moment.
Rosetta: this is for both my father and my grandfather. My father died of cancer and my grandfather of Altzheimer's. Saw them wither away, and die. Rosetta aims to find how proteins fold and give us a better understanding of diseases such as the aforementioned, and, hopefully, new and better cures for all disease.
World Community Grid: same reasons as Rosetta, but also because they are open to minor projects that do not have the means to make their own BOINC project. So WCG helps minor projects, mostly those that have to do with diseases such as AIDS and cancer.
I would love to add a few more projects but, at the moment, I only have two computers that can shrub. _________________

Currently shrubbing as follows:
Rosetta@home
boincsimap
Leiden Classical
Einstein@home
Project TANPAKU
Pirates@home
SETI@home
Spinhenge@home
SZTAKI Desktop Grid
NanoHive@home
PrimeGrid
uFluids
Like Tenebra, I was an old SETI@home participant and finally found my way back home to this very institute ...
As for why,
because each held some attraction, the old celery processor could handle it, and, well, there is work to be done.
LHC@home is on my list, but they have been without work since I came back on board so, c'est la vie!
P.S. Am guided by the BAM suggestion of being wary of alpha and beta projects
with exceptions made based on input from and _________________ Klaatu... verata... n... Necktie. Nectar. Nickel. Noodle |

SETI - Same reasons as many. Started it before BOINC, and stuck with it once it moved. Was on it early.
Einstein - Learning more about our universe is something that may get us out there better, etc. Plus UWM is in my home town.
CPDN - I do not believe in global warming, and I think this will prove that we are just in a pattern of world change, just like the ice age, etc. The climate will change in different patterns over time.
My newest is SETI Beta. There are very few people on this, and they need people to test for new applications. So I put a couple of machines on this, with only a little resource to allow them to help figure out their next versions. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

Let's see, where to begin.....how about at the beginning.
I started with SETI Classic, cause I read about it in Time magazine or some other such publication and thought it sounded like something I could get into. I looked into it, signed up and shrubbed the classic until they shut it down, then I hopped onto the BOINC bandwagon and continued shrubbing SETI. I guess I have always been too much of a nerd/geek to believe that we are alone in the universe. Too many Star Trek episodes too I guess.
You won't find anything if you don't look for it either, so I help look.
Then I found out about Rosetta after my Father in law got sick (he got stomach cancer), and decided that protein folding/cancer research was a worthy cause too....maybe it would help find a cure for him...ran out of time. Maybe it will help with someone else then. So Rosetta was added and is continued.
Then I found out about Einstein. I think it is an interesting project and as I have come to find out during the meetings, I am a credit Ho, so I signed up there.
Along the way, I have added Belgian Beer, Pirates, WCG and Orbit. They sounded like worthy projects/cool names or were start ups, so I jumped on board. They recieve a minority of the shrub time. I still stick with the main 3 of SETI, Rosetta and Einstein. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

My reasons are much more mundane. I, too, started with SETI classic. I don't remember how I found out about it, but it intrigued me. It wasn't long before I started spending time in the statistics section of the SETI website, and paying attention to teams and computers doing spectacular things. When the big challenges started coming about, where people were looking to get the fastest processing time possible with huge clusters and mainframes, that I fell into the statistics trap. I joined a team that was silly, but in the top 10 for the whole world and charging hard. That team was the KWSN!
The projects I crunch now are a mix of reliable projects and "meaningful" projects. I still crunch SETI, but have added Einstein, Rosetta, WCG, Proteins, Malaria Control, Spinhenge, Climate Prediction, SIMAP and Nano-Hive to the mix. Some, like Nano-Hive, I crunch because the science is really interesting to me. Others, like WCG and Rosetta, I crunch because of their potential value to the healthcare community (and have actually "borged" machines with the permission of the owner, so long as they are doing something like WCG).
Such an interest in projects would be enough for me to run things on the machines I have, but my interest in stats is what keeps me looking for the next machine to add to the farm. I can assuage any feelings of guilt I have by pointing out that if one machine is doing some good, more machines are doing more good. _________________

My heart is in the TSC project, because TS is, among other things, an autistic spectrum disorder, and I have an autistic son, so I've been doing it since 2003, now. I have this thing for sticking with a project once I start it.
When they started recycling work units ad nauseum, I started doing grid.org. I still am, and will probably transfer my tally over here in the not too distant future.
Folding at home- have been doing it for many years in my wife's name. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Osteogenesis Imperfecta are three of the disorders which FAH studies directly, or indirectly.
I'd love to do WCG, but I don't want to get spread too thin. Maybe when grid.org closes down.... |

where do I start.... (look at the sig below)
I'm currently shrubbing SETI, Rosetta, and Spinhenge......I tend to rotate the projects I shrub so that list WILL change...
I like Astronomy & Physics projects because I'm into that kind of stuff and and Biology Projects because of the benefit to humankind
so the order of the projects below is pretty much my order of favouritism, apart from LHC which is higher up the list but the stats haven't updated for a loooong time now

I run SETI because I am looking for intelligent life, and what we are doing here is not very Intelligent.
SETI@home member since 20 Nov 1999
Total credit 171,054.40
Recent average credit 356.59
SETI@home classic workunits 10,250
SETI@home classic CPU time 72,155 hours
Rosetta@home TC 389 Avg Cr. 35 joined 4 May 2007
update: I have added Rosetta@home to BOINC; (I am still looking for intelligent life.)
Why Rosetta@home? I have given it a lot of thought, and there are those who are close to me who have died from cancer, have been treated and now are cancer free, or who have cancer now.
