Dialect Society Announces 'Words Of The Year'
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Former planet Pluto may have gotten a demotion, but it's also getting a promotion.
An upstate New York lexicographer said the American Dialect Society has selected "plutoed" as its 2006 Word of the Year.
David Barnhart said the 117-year-old society selected the word at their annual conference in Anaheim, California, on Friday. Barnhart is a member of the ADS, and is president of the Dictionary Society of North America.
The organization defines "plutoed" as "to demote or devalue something or someone, as happened to the former planet Pluto when the International Astronomical Union decided the ninth planet no longer met its definition of a planet."
The word-of-the-year declaration is given to a word or phrase that was newly prominent or notable in the past year.
