I think this was on slashdot and/or digg in the past so some of you may have seen this before but it bears repeating. Here is an analysis of the digital rights management "features" built into Windows Vista in terms of the hidden costs they will force both directly and indirectly on the comsumer (us).
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.txt
Basically Microsoft is so paranoid about people being able to pirate multimedia content that they are beginning to make your computer unusable. If I went out and legally bought an HD-DVD right now I could not play it on my legally purchased computer and LCD because they don't conform to Microsoft's "security" standards. This is complete crap!
They are even trying to dictate hardware design to video card, sound card and motherboard manufacturers. This will increase the cost of these components and cause them to not work in anything but windows.
Well I guess I won't repeat the entire paper here as you can read it for yourself. Just keep some tranquilizers near. The total absurdity of it made me quite mad by the end of it
Unfortunately I'm not sure what can be done about this but I hope (even though it isn't very likely) that this is the beginning of the end for Microsoft. I can dream, can't I? |

I have a beta copy of Vista that I was going to try out, but after researching it a bit I decided against it. Drm is only the tip of the iceberg. For about 90% of us Vista will require new hardware. Nobody can even test the new graphics cards yet to see how DX 10 will work as there no drivers for them, and it is not backwards compliant so none of your current games or graphic software will work on the Vista platform. Not to mention the price. For a premium copy of home it costs $240.00 US. And Ultimate costs an astounding $400.00 US. I do beleive that this just might make several million people worldwide try Linux. If this program has similar problems as ALL other previous Windoze releases, then we could see the end of Microsoft's nearly complete dominance of the OS market. I do beleive that would be a good thing for humanity.
Ps:
1) There are literally Dozens of apps that dont work properly with Vista. Like iTunes and any Java based app. not to mention ANYTHING that has to do with DVD ripping or viewing.
2) There is no hardware audio. So anything that uses DirectSound 3D or EAX will not work.
3) Most comps will need a Bios upgrade to work. And many of your peripherals that are USB or Joystick or Serial ports won't work. (they may later)
4) You will need new drivers for just about EVERYTHING. Do you know where to get drivers for your Web cam or old Printer or Joystick.
For most of us I do beleive that it is better to wait and let somebody else deal with the NIGHTMARE that will be the first couple of months.

I'm already feeling my way around Linux........not as much stuff available but it's a damn sight quicker to load. Got it as a dual-boot. _________________

load Vista now... be loading updates patches 'service packs' ad infinitum or --- hasta la vista (until the alpacas come home)
of course its "about the economy, stupid" MS' economy in the market
"Microsoft Works"? an oxymoron. Stay with XP if not Linux and - wait: While we do, read Prof. Peter Gutmann's very thorough report - plenty of stuff there to entertain for a few years.

I started using Ubuntu on one machine recently.
Unfortunately, no matter what you may think about Microsoft, I discovered that Linux is still way behind Windows when it comes to user friendliness. (And Ubuntu is generally considered one of the more easy-to-use distros)
I will probably migrate all my only-for-shrubbing machines to Linux, but I'll keep one Windows machine for main use.
Not sure if I'll upgrade to Vista, though. At least not until it's become the majority OS (which it will, it's only a matter of time). _________________
