Alcohol Reduces Arthritis Effects In Mice

A study in mice indicates alcohol could reduce the risk for rheumatoid arthritis. Swedish researchers studied mice that were prompted to develop rheumatoid arthritis. Some of the mice were given plain water, while others had water spiked with 10 percent alcohol.

Rheumatoid arthritis didn't develop as quickly in the mice that drank the alcohol, and when it did develop, it was not as aggressive.

Researchers are quick to point out humans should not start drinking heavily to ward off rheumatoid arthritis. The levels given to the mice in this study would be toxic in people.
The mice in this study were all male, while rheumatoid arthritis usually affects women.
