My new HP Pavillion PC that I got in September, crashed this AM, it's the one that has all my working stuff on. The HP Tech (India) said it may be the Video Card or the Ram chip. I was reading here and it went black, nada since then, so it's in to my PC guy. I really hope I don't have to send it away as it has all our personal stuff and all our passwords stored in a Word Doc. I guess now hubby will make sure the PC's are networked and I will put a password on the word docs, quicken and medical info from now on.

This is so agravating and exasperating, a new machine I spent good $ on so this would not happen.

Now does anyone have a clue what else may have happened? Sad TIA

I was reading and the screen went blank, the message on the monitor said "the monitor is going to sleep now". The PC never was able to power up again, the HP Tech made hubby jump through hoops doing all kinds of things. The monitor is fine it is only 3 weeks old and it came up everytime the PC was rebooted. With the analog thingy in the corner and the sleeping notice.

Is that enough info?
Can you update tonight or until I can get into my working PC? TIA

Probably the same hoops the tech did but there were not power lights on the PC?

No fan noises nothing?

Sounds like possibly Power Supply.. Didn't you have one go recently also? You have a power issue at your house? You running 150,000 christmas lights or something?

Hubby said he heard fan noise when the PC tried to start, but then dead silence. The light at the on button was on and the 2 CD drives tried to start. I have APC's on all my PC's cause of small brown outs.

No the other PC was at the rental house when the power supply went.

hmm can only guess if your getting power and drives light up then it does leave just the motherboard, video card, or monitor. But usually if a video card or MB bite the big one you'll hear some sort of error code beeps.

Also yes i'll do updates what were your days?

If lights come on then it means that the power supply works.

If it is the power supply, then there is a chance the hard disk might be damaged too. Sorry about this, but had it happen to the main server at work. Power supply burned and one of the two disks was damaged beyond repair. Fortunately I had a mirror on the second disk so no data loss.

If it is the motherboard, then you need a new motherboard and you might need to reinstall everything, from windows to the programs etc.

I would advise you to have two disks, one where your programs and windows are, and one to keep all your files, with a periodic backup on CD/DVD of the most important data you need.

I have that actually, and also an external hard disk. (Okay I am a bit of a computer freak and have 650 Gb in total in the 3 HDDs)

Could be anything with those symptoms.

Well, not quite anything.

In the order I would suspect them:
Motherboard
Power Supply
Drive (floppy, CD, or Hard Drive)
keyboard

(less likely, but possible)
CPU
RAM
video card
mouse
USB device
poltergeist.

Disconnect everything you can from the motherboard and attempt to boot it. I'm sure the PC guy is trying this as we type.

Good luck.

Glad to hear it's home again! If it happens again, and you're worried about sensitive data, you could always swap the drive to another computer or into an external enclosure and access it as a secondary drive. Assuming the drive isn't damaged, you could easily copy or remove any important or sensitive files!
