Well, tomorrow (Tuesday Dec 19/06), I leave for a 2 week working 'holiday' to Santiago de Cuba, getting back home on Jan 2/07.
A team of 13 or 14 from all over the world are due to converge on the Universidad de Oriente http://www.uo.edu.cu/ in Santiago de Cuba to revamp the university's network.
This work is being done in association with the World University Service of Canada http://www.wusc.ca/welcome/.
All personnel are providing their time 'pro bono'.
The Cuban Government is picking up the tab for flights, hotel, transportation and basic living expenses.
The only down-side is that because the Cubans are paying, we must fly on Cubana Airlines !! http://www.cubana.cu/html/ingles/index.asp?language=GB.
Hopefully we get 1 of their 2 Airbus A-320's NOT the Yakovlevs, Antonovs or Illushins. Shocked Shocked
Can anyone lend me their copy of the last season of "LOST" DVD for some pointers???
btw, their Internet connections are so intermittent and flaky that it is not worth considering BORGING their workstations. Sad Sad

See you all in the new year. #ni-1 #ni-1

Bon voyage! I haven't been to Cuba since 1953 and I imagine it has changed somewhat. I wonder if La Floridita - the cradle of the frozen daiquiri - still exists. Hasta mas ver.

I just hope you make it back, check on Fidel while you're there.

All kidding aside, please be very careful, we would miss our Sir CC. #ni-1

La Floridita is still there in Old Havana as is La Bodeguita del Medio which was Hemingway's bar of choice for Mojitos.
We are going to be quite close to Playa Daiquiri which is where Teddy Roosevelt and his boys landed back in 1898, but the beach itself is very overgrown and not very inviting.

My sister went to Cuba twice, but not on vacation... She went for my father to get the blue scorpion venom, which is supposed to help cancer patients. Unfortunately my dad's conditions was too far advanced and he died in February 2005.

She liked Cuba very much. She said that Cubans are friendly and very clean people. Although living conditions for Cubans are not the best.

However, do get any info on that cancer cure, I have heard it has helped a lot of patients. It is still being researched, but it seems that it is a viable solution, and a much better alternative to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Which do not really work as much as doctors want us to believe. For every cancer cell they destroy they also destroy a huge part of the immune system.

The blue scorpion drug is supposed to help the immune system destroy the cancerous cells, leaving the healthy cells intact (which is what chemo and radio do not as they cannot target only the cancerous cells).

Yes, do not write off Cuba. When I went there as a young man, it was paradise. The wonderful people, the wonderful climate, the MUSIC, which has only recently been discovered by the rest of the world thanks to Wim Wenders. One of these days, I've got to go back...
P.S. Tenebra, there was something in the Globe and Mail today (Toronto newspaper), saying that chemo is not the best therapy for breast cancer.

And when you fly AirCuba request the non-livestock section. At the very least, insist on being 20 feet from any goat.

Well, I'm back.
Cubana Airlines were great. We flew on an Airbus A-320. Great seat room. Cooked in-flight meals, free wine, free headsets, movie on the way home was "Last Holiday" with Queen Latifah.
Temperature most days in the high 80's.
Had 2 rain showers in 14 days (total of maybe 25 minutes).
Thanks to our host, Professor Alfonso (don't call me Alf) DelRosario Ruiz, we had a great time and actually managed to finish the task of re-wiring, re-certifying and re-configuring 2,123 network connections on 27 network segments with Netopia switches and routers (from The Netherlands, NOT the USA).
Will try to post a few pics later, but they would not allow photography anywhere on the university campus and you don't try to argue the point with 3 guys in fatigues carrying Kalashnikovs. Shocked #2gunfire #2gunfire

Sir CC, I sure am glad you're back in one piece. I was afraid Fidel would keep you there, since you are such a nice person. Wink

Welcome back! #ni-1

No pictures of a campus? Wow, scary stuff. But I am sure Fidel was right when he called the place a "People's Paradice". Rolling Eyes
