I have tried in the past to install to a xp pro system as a service and I get a message that I don't have the neccessary permissions. It asks for a password and I have no passwords on my machine. I tried the default password of "admin" but that was not accepted. I have tried on several machines and have never got it to work. I have surfed the net and it seems that other people don't seem to have this problem. What am I doing wrong?

1. Go to http://www.slackware.com/
2. grab CD images
3. burn
4. Install Slackware Linux
5. log in
6. grab boinc from same site
7. install
8. run using ./boinc &
9. enjoy life

In my experience, you need to have a password set in order to be able to install as a service. If you don't have a password (even if you're an admin), it will fail with that "not enough permissions" error.

jonnyv is correct seti's install is anal retentive and if your administrative account does not have a password it will fail and does not give you the option to use the built in windows service account. So usually i have an account on the machine with userid and password that had admin rights. To make sure it starts and so i don't have to worry about the account, i go into the services and tell it to run as a windows service once it installs itself into the services control panel. Then blow away that user account if not needed. I also have had some good results creating the registry keys myself and having it launch as a service that way, but helps to have it run as a service somewhere so you can see how the registry keys are.

Ok, sorry it took me so long to reply.
Cohiba & jonnyv are correct except for one thing. I set up a new account as an administrator and boinc installed no problem. But then when I deleted the account boinc would not start, even when I ordered it to in the services window. But there is a fix. open Administrative Tools / Services and right click boinc. chose properties and then the tab "Log On" Click Local System account then apply. You are done and it will now work... Additionally there is no way to access boinc from the system tray (by the clock) or from the start menu anymore so you must open the boinc folder (most likely in C:/Program Files/Boinc) and make a shortcut on your desktop if you want to interact with the manager. Thanks for all your help guys. Looks like this is the way to Borg a machine...
