A new version of the BOINC core client was released yesterday. The current version for windows linux and mac is 5.4.9. Get it here. Here is a copy/paste from the email Rom wrote about the release:
Quote:
This version has a little bit of something for everyone.

Here is a quick summary of new features:
1. You can use your favorite account manager to easily attach to new
projects. Please see BOINC for a list of account managers and what they
could be used for.
2. Better personal firewall support for the screensaver. For those who
were experiencing lockups when the screensaver was activated, this
release should fix that problem.
3. Preferences can be overridden when a global_prefs_override.xml is
specified. Please see Preference Override.
4. Better notification about BOINC's network access needs.
5. SOCKS5 proxies should now work properly.

Many small bug fixes went into the release to improve the overall
quality of our software. We hope everyone like the result.

If you use a proxy server you should hold off on upgrading until we have
resolved an issue with NTLM authentication. We should have a fix
available in a few days.

The development team would like to thank all those involved with testing
the latest generation of BOINC clients. Without all your hard work we
wouldn't have as high of quality product as we do today.

Upgrading should be as simple as shutting down boinc, installing the new one and restarting. If you want to be sure, copy the entire boinc folder to another location as backup in case something fails.

No projects require the upgrade so no hurry but it is always good to keep current.

The progress part of the clinet, of how much work is completed in percentage terms has been expanded to be 3 decimal places instead of two. I guess some people really want to know how much progress they have completed in very exact terms.

I'd recommend making a backup before upgrading. Mine kept getting interupted (unknown why) and wound up deleting the boinc manager. Even after I made a backup of all the files and deleted the boinc directory.. still interupted.

[Edit] Had to reboot to install a couple Windoze updates I forgot about.. BOINC then installed without a hitch *mutter* Almost a month without rebooting too... [/Edit]

All been okay so far on my Slackware 10.2 Linux server - If you see my RAC drop off badly then you'll know it's a bad BOINC manager to install.

With 5.4.1 it went smoothly for me, and without incident. At first, I was wondering when a CPDN model went bust on me, but then I read about them sending the whole killer trickle out and stuff Surprised

Naturally, I should get off a beta version, but after I've finished my horde of LHC shrubs :rofl

Hope I didn't make a mistake by uninstalling 5.2.13 before installing 5.4.9. Rolling Eyes

I'll check my CPDN model later, but for now I'm running WCG 100% to help out our stats on that project. We're in 134th place fer cryin out loud!

I installed 5.4.9 (XP) over the top of 5.2.13. 5.4.9 picked up where 5.2.13 left off. Note that the task tab updates every second now instead of every four or five or whatever it was.

Gosh, old news to me, updated yesterday... didn't have a problem, nor a boinc.... hee hee!

I just can't figure out the managers. I just use boinc and set my percentages up through the site pages...

hope to get some lhc shrubs to work on... still none.

Yes, one of the Boinc Gurus should post a tutorial on using account managers....

Is there some way to change this? It really bugs me to see my firewall I/O traffic monitor blink on and off every second even when the client is suspended. Is there some way to change it to update say every 10 to 60 seconds?

A couple suggestions:
If installed as a service, shut the manager off. Use it only when you need it.
Change your firewall to ignore the traffic.
Get a different firewall that is smarter.
