Thats right, there is a new BOINC project out there! The newest addition to the family is Orbit@home. Haven't looked at it much yet but it appears to be analyzing data to detect objects which pass near to the earth. Think of it as a proximity warning system for the planet
I have signed up and founded the KWSN team. We are team #20. I believe they are only looking for 1,000 testers right now but I hear BOINC synergy already has 30 members signed up so I thought I would give the knights a chance
You can create a new account that is automatically on the KWSN team by going here

After less than one day, more than 100 user accounts created! Also still having problems with slashes in urls, we are working on that. As a reminder, we don't have any BOINC application yet, and the scheduler is not running, so the BOINC client will bounce off the orbit@home website without much work to do for now. Update: now the scheduler is running, the BOINC client should be able to connect, ask for work, and then disconnect because there is no work available. The client can also complain for "platform 'x-y-z' not found": this is because there is not an application available yet.
let us know when there's some work and i'll throw some clients towards it. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

While moving toward the users limit (about 860 users, 100 teams), orbit@home is planning for the week. We will try to fix the "User of the day" problem, and also other issues related to team or users listings (thanks for reporting!). We will start to work on an introduction page and on a FAQ, and on the orbit@home logo. Thanks to Finla and Silvershark for contributing their logo! |
Fugedabout da freakin' logos, bring on the work units!!! |

When are we gonna get some frikkin work units already! We've got very small rocks raining down on us all the time plus quite a few huge ones zinging around just WAITING for the perfect moment to smash us to smithereens! I'm getting sick and tired of wearing my tin foil lined hard hat/pith helmet. We need to start tracking all these orbitting menaces before I lose my grip!

Latest news from orbit:
October 21, 2005
In the last month, we've not been able to work on orbit@home on a daily basis for various reasons, but still some important results have been achieved. The most important improvements to orbit@home are the result of the collaboration with Pan-STARRS (http://pan-starrs.ifa.hawaii.edu/public/) researchers in order to be ready to analyze their observations as soon as their survey starts (first light for PS1 prototype is scheduled for early 2006) and the observations are made publicly available. This requires substantial science-code development, and the results so far are extremely positive. As the first wave of WU demonstrated, the code based on ORSA works correctly on remote clients (only Linux platform tested for the moment). In order to provide WUs on a daily basis, we are developing a science-database and the relative management code. This will take a fair amount of time, about two more months of work. For this reason, the beta phase will be postponed to early 2006. Clients for Windows and Mac OS X will be provided as soon as the scientific application is considered sufficiently stable on the Linux platform. All the clients will be provided and tested during the alpha phase, to fix all the major problems before the beta phase.

Here are a couple of articles in this area.
Quote: | Imagine last year's tsunami, last month's earthquake in Pakistan, and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma all rolled into one — and then some. If nations can't handle those calamities, what's going to happen when an asteroid collides with Earth?
In 30 years, there is a 1-in-5,500 chance that a smallish asteroid will land a bull's eye on our planet. At 360 yards wide, it could take out New York City and much of the surrounding area. Fortunately, experts believe further observations of the asteroid, 99942 Apophis, will almost certainly rule out an impact in 2036. Nevertheless, it's precisely that kind of predictable and preventable threat — and the thought of being ill-prepared for it — that alarms the world's normally intrepid spacefarers who are calling for action.

Here's an organisation set up with a goal to "significantly alter the path of an asteroid by 2015".

Looks cool, but I'm detaching from that project for now, since nothing's happening for several months... |

Looks like Orbit@Home is virtually dead due to lack of funding. As with so many many things in life, THIS ANGERS ME! I am sick and tired of very small rocks raining down from the heavens and denting my iron helmet! The noise in my brain is deafening!

Take off that helmet and step into another project. Most any project will welcome you with open arms. _________________ Don't fuss about growing older, many are denied the chance. |

I have begun throwing the rocks back up. We will see what effect, if any, this has. |

Yes, seriously for a moment, I have been eagerly awaiting a chance to sign up and crunch for this project. I am hopeful that the situation improves soon. _________________
