Its interesting that at some point people just don't care what certifications they have. I've got em big deal, got a $15,000 diploma that did me a lot of good, when all they wanted was another cheaper piece of paper. All my certs did was help me get a job, now that i have years of experience behind me the certs are less important. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

Updated News:
My desktop computer has been updated to SP2. And with success! Yahoo! I made sure that I updated my computer with the patches for the HP Desktop before I started the install. The install of SP2 took a very very long time.
After I made sure that SP2 was working, I decided to take the risk and remove Norton and install AVAST. I don't like the fact that AVAST will not do a scheduled virus scan but the software does seem user friendly. I can handle running the virus scan manually. Besides it is free. I went ahead and turned on the Windows Firewall.
I am feeling very PC literate today. That is until asks me something about PCs that I have no clue about.
Thanks to all who offered me advice and help. It helped me to take the risk to improve the security on my desktop. (and spend no money doing it. ) _________________ |----Ni---Ni----|

Well done Lady DC, a tiny point Windows built in firewall is OK for inbound protection but it has no facility for monitoring outbound traffic. This means if you already have a nastie or something you do not want, reporting back to the manufacturer or software developer, it will keep on going. I use the previously mentioned Zonealarm as it is easy to configure and has been rock solid performer, it has never failed Shields up at GRC.

Yes should help you get your first job as a grunt since most only require A+ and a highschool diploma for a technition or helpdesk. Depending on what you want to do as a caree depends on what you do next, may jobs do require both the 15,000 useless piece of paper, and the certs. Though I agree college is a waste of money since about the only thing i use and gained any knowlege for the REAL world would be programming. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

Update to the saga:
I installed ZoneAlarm on my Desktop and then my Avast update stopped working. I tried everything. I did not find much with the error for Avast in google. But then I found something about proxies. Since I did not use proxies, I wanted to ignore it. But that ended up being the issue. "Proxy server settings was automatically set to "Auto detect (use Internet Explorer settings) in Avast configuration. Had to set it to "Direct connection (no proxy)".
I will be looking into BitDefender later on. RL tends to be busy right now. _________________ |----Ni---Ni----|

Sounds like your firewall ( zonealarm) blocked avast maybe. try looking under the blocked programs list in zonealarm.
Bitdefender has a built in firewall with the program , but also needs a few things moded so that it works right _________________ What I found out in life is that theirs a fat man behind everything great in life.

Once I changed the Avast configuration to not auto detect, it updates regularly. For some reason zonealarm was not friendly with that config. _________________ |----Ni---Ni----|
