I love seti.. I crossed over from classic about a month ago and I am about to enter the top 500 at KWSN yippie.. but I have a prob
My comp is shutting itself off wayyyy to often since I installed new seti software.. I installed speed fan.. my temp Ive never seen above 72, Ive also run mem tests ram tests.. they also ran with out a problem
Several months ago I installed a radeon 9550 256 mb.. My power supply is only 300 watts.. so I know I need to upgrade that.. bu\t my problems seem to happen when seti is running.Once I actually caught the screen saver graph stumble right before the comp shut off.. It also seems to happen when my comp finishes a work unit and is reporting it. or switching to the next unit.. I run win xp 512 ram 2 gghz. I had had my settings at 10 percent for graphics.. but last night upped it to 30 percent, since I thought maybe that was the problem.. Any thoughts as to why this is happenening.. comp completly shuts off? |

Could it be something to do with virus scanning, as it happens when you are sending in work units?
I had to uninstall Zone Alarm as it was terminating my internet line whenever a work unit was sent in.
Maybe your scanning programme thinks you have been taken over by aliens when your computer sends off work units all on its owneyo, and pulls the plug.
Happy New Year!

Could be the power supply.
You have a new graphics card which draws more power than your old one (probably)
When SETI is running, your processor is working harder and also draws more power, maybe just enough to suck the power supply dry occasionally. To test this, try a programs called CPUBurn or Prime95, which are designed to work your CPU as hard as possible. If your power supply is the problem, these should crash more often than SETI.
72 degrees C also seems a bit hot (unless its summer where you are).
Clean the dust out of the CPU fan heatsink also, if you arent doing that occasionally. Open up the side of your case and point a small desk fan so that it blows cool air into your case, see if that helps. IF it does, add additional case fans. There's usually a place on the back panel under the power supply (blowing hot air out) or on the front panel near the bottom (blowing cool air in). _________________ 0.0 Giggly hertzes Folding!

ty for responses.. I have a new can of dust off for tommorrow, but it might an antivirus thing too. but it doesnt happen all the time..... It does though seem to happen more often when i am between work units. Its rather annoying though.. I want my comp working while im sleeping or at work and to wake up or come home to it off no es bueno im gonna see if I can figure out a config where the graphics almost never run, or not at all.
I ran a mem test and had np but Ill try youres, Ill check back in a few if it persists |

The other problem I had was automatic Windows updates. If you are set to receive updates automatically, they download, install AND THEN SHUT OFF the computer. Now I set my computer to download updates but not to install them until I say so.
Good luck!

radeon 9550 256
I had a similar problem, turned out to be a driver issue with the radeon, then it turned out to be a toasted radeon - fan had died and i didn't know it. Check to make sure fan is running, your not overclocking the radeon you are running the latest ATI drivers, and if possible swap with a different video card to test. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |
