Howdy All,

Tonight I'm trying to help my Dad (Elderberry Sr.) to get his iMAC (running OS 9.2.2) working up to snuff, I I knw absolutely nothing about the iMAC.

Question #1: Any recommendation for a better browser of IE5? Firefox doesn't support OS9.2.2, so I need something else. Suggestions?

I've never used it, but here's one

iCab

But i'd recommend this one...

Opera 6.03

Thanks, I'll give Opera a try.

Now if only I can get my Dad to stop changing things he doesn't remember how to fix ... (long story).

It's been a reallllllllyyyyy long time since I ran OS9, but I do believe that it does have the capability to support multiple users and the "admin" can restrict the kinds of things the (designed for kids) users can change.

Opera works pretty well, unfortunately it's not completely M$ compatible so some sites like banks and such don't render properly.

You might consider an OS upgrade but that kind of depends on the configuration of the iMac in question as OSX does require a fair amount of RAM to feel "correct". I run it on a 350MHz G3 and it's acceptable, although one grinds ones teeth if one was just on the dual 2.5GHz G5. The iMac is newer than my G3, so if the iMac has like, 512M of RAM it wouldn't be terrible. OSX also supports multiple users with restrictions and the Safari browser is pretty good. The new email client is good too... simple.

The answer to your question is Yes!

Here's the sad part of the story: my Dad is suffering from dementia. This is a man who has been working with computers since the 1950's, was a professor of Computer Science, and now can't remember enough about his computer to send an email. Sad He hasn't lost his curiousity though, just the other night I watched him re-alias the floppy drive to a gif file. This is handy if you like the little picture that pops up when you request the floppy drive, but not so handy if you want to use the drive. I figured how to work around this, but I have no idea how to fix it.

The good news is my Dad has taken up his old hobby of woodworking, which draws on long term memory, and he can do quite well.

On the lighter side, it would be fair to say my Dad has dementia, and I am merely demented. Wink

I already looked into getting OSX for his computer, and decided to stay with OS 9 due to memory limitations (computer and Dad).

I'll check out iCab too. Thanks!

And thanks again to all for the replies.

It always amazes me when men have sons and when they are born, they want that boy to be just like them, the dad. Then as you get older the dad takes all the good parts of the son and re-invents himself to be more like the son.

I lost to many friend to dementia and I know where you are coming from, I really meant nothing senister about my questions, I just wanted you to know that. You are a special son to help your dad and woodworking is a great place for him to be at this moment, long term memory will always be there, the short is the pits.

Treasure all the moments you two still have.
