Well, I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the Gorge, but I can always move this. Here's what I need to get off my chest...

My daughter has a karate tournament tomorrow, and I have to drive up past Boston, to Malden, which I haven't done since last March, and I'M NERVOUS AS HELL!

Nervous for her to do well. I've made it very clear that it's not important to me if she wins anything or not, I just want her to have fun and do her best, that's all anyone can ask. But still, I hope she gets something and isn't totally bummed out ... (She takes American Tang Soo Do and is a Green Belt, second stripe. Next test she goes for her Red belt. Then she gets two stripes on that, and then, it's black belt. Maybe by the time she's 10.)

Also, I'm VERY NERVOUS about driving up there with just her and me in the car. Her Aunt, my sister-in-law was going to come with us, but she's very ill, so she can't make it, so I'm on my own and I HATE THAT! I get so white knuckled, and it's so stupid, really. People make this commute everyday, yet it's got me very anxoius.

So, I'm admitting it here, as I can't admit it anywhere else, and I'm getting it off my chest....

Whooooo!

Who's next.

I went for the single malt option, but I like blends too. And bourbons.

It's just a drive. You do it all the time. It'll be fine.

I went for the chocolate cake. Embarassed
Chocolate is always good in a crisis.

Lady K, I know exactly how you feel but I know you can do it. Girls can do anything. #ni-1 The anticipation is nearly always the worst. Once you get on the road, you'll wonder what you were so worried about.

Black belt by age 10? That's awesome, she must be tough. She'll do fine, and so will you, because she must get the toughness from somewhere.

(Voted for the logic option Very Happy )

If anyone cuts you off on the road, just say... #ni-1 to them!

I would go for the logic but the single malt is very consoling as well.

How do I vote - there doesn't seem to be a mechanism.

Good luck Lady Kla. Stop off regularly for toilet breaks.

Single malts are fine, but top-shelf Kentucky Bourbon is better.

Fair Lady K, I was once engaged in a quest when I happened into a clearing where a large number of evil knights were waiting in ambush. Naturally, they all attacked at once. I found myself... overwhelmed.

I discovered that if I methodically slew them one at a time, rather than trying to face them all at once, they were much more manageable. Shortly I discovered that there were only a few left, and they weren't all that tough. As the last few ran away, I shouted after them a hearty #ni-1

I drive to and through Boston frequently. Know your route in advance, watch for landmarks in advance of your turns so you're in the right lane in time, and most importantly, SHOW NO FEAR. Boston drivers can smell fear... (Actually, in my experience, they're mostly surprisingly polite!)

Good luck to your daughter. She sounds like a mighty warrior.

Got any picks? I picked up a couple bottles of bourbon recently and I'm really liking the Evan Williams 1995 single barrel.

I haven't tried Evan Williams. I'll look for it.

My favorite right now is Woodford Reserve, by Labrotte & Graham. I believe it's the only brand they make. I like Booker's, which is pricey, and Baker's and Basil Hayden, which aren't. Knob Creek is OK. All four are Jim Beam brands (each blended from selected barrels to achieve their distinct taste profile, supposedly). I think WR is better, though.

I'll drink Old Grand Dad or Wild Turkey if that's what you've got. I might have to put ice in it, though. (It goes without saying that I would never put anything other than ice in my bourbon. Ni!)

There's another one someone served me, which was great, but I can't remember what it's called! It came in a rather ornate bottle, I believe, and I remember it was dark colored for bourbon.

I'm not crazy about Jack Daniels and other "Tenessee Whiskeys" that are charcoal filtered. I don't go for the charcoal taste.

Woodford's one of the ones I picked up.

Good luck finding the Evan Williams. Most places only have the sour mash. I haven't tried that one, so I can't say whether it's good, bad or ugly. I was actually looking for their 1783, which is supposed to be good, and cheap, but no one around here can get it.

I also grabbed a bottle of Bulleit. It's good. My only complaint being that the bottle design seems to make it difficult to pour without spilling.

I definitely agree about Jack Daniels. It's only suitable for mixers.

I'm a Crown Royal gal myself. But only when someone else is paying!

Well, for those of you who know, driving in and around Boston is worse than drving in Rome. (And that's saying alot!) But the trip went ok. Only had to drive around 75mph to keep people from beeping at me and swerving around me. Only a few white knuckle experiences. The worst was being in the middle of 6 lanes of traffic all going between 70 and 80 and then the lane lines disappeared. So of course, people start creating more lanes, and when the lane markers came back there were only 4 lanes instead of 6. Yeeks! The name of the game when driving around Boston is Chicken! It's a big game of chicken. You hesitate, someone else will go.

So, Tournament results. My daughter did Great! I'm so very proud of her. I always prep her for not bringing home anything as there were a lot of kids who didn't take anything home, but for her division:

Breaking: 1st Place
Forms: 2nd Place
Sparring: 2nd Place

Out of 7 girls. Glad we went, but glad we're home.

One more ps. Filled the tank before I left Malden as the price was $1.99 per gallon. Here, over the bridge 70 miles away it's still $2.29. Typical.

Over here on the auld sod, we go for whiskey with an e.

Bushmills (12 miles from where I live) is definitely the best Smile It is the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world (original licence 1608). The flavour is between Scotch and Irish as we are in Northern Ireland which has a long history of movement to and from Scotland. So not as harsh as Scotch whisky, but less bland than Irish whiskey. We drink it neat, but a small dash of water is acceptable. Definitely no ice - it's more like cognac than other forms of whiskey or whisky.

Original Bushmills, and Black Bush (matured in Oloroso sherry casks) are the commonest varieties, but the 10 year-old single malt and the (expensive) 25 year-old version are an experience to savour.

Enjoy!

Nothing wrong with a wee bit o' the Irish now and again.

When I go Irish, I'm a big fan of the Bushmill's 12 year old. I think it's much better than the 7 year old.

And anything with "Bush" in the name, mill or Black, is good by me.

#ni-1

Lady K, please forgive us for hijacking your thread. Congratulations to your daughter. I hereby raise a jelly jar of Basil Hayden in her honor.

My heritage is Irish and I can't stand drinking, it makes me sick to smell it. My older folks came from some little town in Ireland.

Your daughter did really well, Lady K. #ni-1 Good on her!

I'm Scottish (Mackay clan descendant) and Irish on my maternal grandmothers side. I do rather like a Scotch and ginger ale (or 2 or 3) with lots of ice.

I mostly drink Scottish Islands single malts - think Laphroig, Ardbeg, etc.
Preferably at cask strength and neat. Twisted Evil

That said, I do notice a Black Bush and a 12 year old Bushmills lurking in the cupboard, but I think that might be something to do with Lady Furry, who prefers her Whisky with an 'e' Razz (and fewer phenols... Rolling Eyes )
