Well I bought a new PC for downstairs today, it has a AMD Anthelon 3000+, 80G with 512 Ram, will this handle folding better than my one now that's 10+ years old?

I only need it to fold and to play some games I purchased and downloaded from Pogo. The only programs I have on there is Outlook, so all you younguns need to send me your personal info so I can add you to my loony/looney Outlook.

If I knew how to figure out how to take everything off that old HP and just fold I would maybe keep it just for folding. Any ideas? #ni-1

This new one will run circles around your old one. My AMD Athlon 3200+ does roughly over 200 points per day.

Thx Dagger, I think I made a good deal since I only paid $400.00 for it. The HP 10+ years ago I paid $1800.00 and had it upgraded several times. Hubby will start getting it up and running maybe tomorrow.

Is there anyway we can take info from the old PC and transfer it to new PC by way of a USB?

TIA for any help.

That I don't know, I don't have the technical knowhow on how to hook up stuff like that.

Dial up or network? network transfer is the easiest.

No dial up anymore, we have Direcway Satellite and both PC's are networked. Does that make it easier? If so how do I do this little job?

You should be able to enable file sharing on the old one..

Something like (on win98)

Start -> help -> enter the words "File sharing" and look for a wizard to help you. It'll ask you questions and such.

to do it by hand: Win 98
right click "Network Neighborhood" -> left click "Properties"
Check the box to enable file and printer sharing
got to a windows explorer and find the folder you want to share,,, like "My Documents" "My Pictures", etc

right click the folder you want to share, and select sharing,
answer the questions. for now, leave it as read only (if you don't want to be able change the files on the old machine when you are sitting at the new one). select full access (if you want to be able to do so) Pick and remember a password, so none of us will be able to hack into your system and see your stuff.

From your new Windows XP machine, "My network places" -> view entire network -> you should see icons for both machines, and be able to browse down into the folders you shared, entering the password when asked.

I am doing this from memory, so I have probably made a few goofs and left a few things out. Other more geeky Kniggits can correct my many errors, if it doesn't work for you. But that is the basic idea; enable file sharing, then share the folders, then connect up to them from the new machine.

Once the connection is made, you can drag the photos and such out of the old machine, and drop them into the new machine's "My Documents" or other folder of your choice, and sip coffee while the computers do all the work.

We do have Networking on both PC's. Can we put everything from old PC to upstairs PC and then back again to new PC? We have Windows XP on all PC's.

Am I asking dumb questions or what?

Not until that last one... Smile

You should be able to do that, it'll take a while... and it depends on what you mean by "everything". All the documents and music and pictures that you created should be no problemo. Programs and such that are "installed" usually have to be reinstalled on the new. And if networked, some programs can tell if 2 copies are running at the same time (one up, 'thother down) and make a fuss. Check to see if any "deauthorization" needs to be done (iTunes for example) on the old before it's taken out of service lest you get caught in the digital rights management nightmare. Twisted Evil

All thats on the old PC downstairs is folding, Cubis Delux2, Solitair games, Microsoft Outlook and Word. It was so slow even with Satellite I never used it for much else cause it was worthless as t*** on a bull.

The only thing i'm worried about is my Outlook files, that has all my names, addresses, phone and email addresses. So I don't want to loose them(I do have backups on a 3-1/4, new PC doesn't have a 3 1/4). I just wish I could hook up a USB from old to new and say abra-cadabra and it will travel through time and walla, be done with itself. I knew my life would not be easy, but I bought that PC anyway. lessee... not being a peeCee person, this is from recollection based on having to migrate from Lookout to (gasp) Notes. I believe that somehow you have to create an archive of all your old lookout stuff, then if you've done file sharing properly you should be able to import the stuff onto the upstairs machine directly. No USB required.

Of course, this could be false hope. Herring may be in my future.

If all you want to save is your outlook addresses, there should be an "import/export" option under the file button. Export your addresses to a file on a floppy or CD and import into the new machine. Bookmarks for IE work the same way.

If you do want to have all three of the computers networked together, we can probably give advice on that as well...

Thanks for all the great input. I think we may just get through this move, it sure is scarey "moving".

I'll let you know how we make out. Laughing

Oh boy. Rolling Eyes

It's nowhere near as good as the one I came out with last night. My mother and I were sitting in the kitchen after dinner, discussing the doors in the laundry we were rehanging. I sat there, looked out to the laundry and the doors that were leaning up against the wall and said, "That's good, all we need to do now is line up and screw." Rolling Eyes Needless to say my mother realised what I'd said before I did, and she burst out laughing. Embarassed

New PC up and running like a charger, Folding its little heart out. Now I may be able to work on this one and actually get it to do something besides just sit there and struggle. Laughing
