Guess who got the bright idea to go out and get an ethernet switch box thingy and cables.
I've connected it all up, the little lights are on, run network setup wizard on both of my computers and my daughter's computer, Network connections recognises the LAN as being installed, but I can't get the computers to show up in My Network Places. When I click View Workgroup Computers, each of the computers only shows itself and not the other 2.
Can anyone give me an idea about what I might have done wrong? Apart from deciding to do it in the first place. _________________ My brain hurts.

Ok, all the stupid questions out of the way first.
Each machine have there own ip address?
Are they in the same work group, under xp check system and the computer name tab. Win98 its in the network settings.
Do they all have file and printer sharing turned on? If not you will not be able to see a computer that is not sharing.
Next if you can see said computers sharing files and printers but get access denied it helps to have matching accounts on said machines.
So if michelle is logged on pc1 she better have an account with permisions to access files and printers on pc2. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

Stupid answers to stupid questions...
Yes, each has its own IP.
Work group is Home for all of them.
File and printer sharing is on.
None of the other computers show up when you click to see the other computers in the workgroup.
As for accounts...this one is Family, my other one is Michelle, and the munchkin's is Kitty Kat.
Does that mean that we have to set each one up with Family, Michelle and Kitty Kat? _________________ My brain hurts.

You need to add login accounts to each computer, ie username and password. I havn't messed with XP too much, but I seem to remember its network wizard asking if I really, really wanted to give others access to the hard drive...
In Win2K you right click on the "My Computer" icon and choose "manage" there you can find the user management option to add, delete or change user accounts. _________________ You can't leave footprints in the Sands of Time while sitting on your butt and who wants to leave Buttprints in the Sands of Time? |

XP SP2 -> ahhh.... check settings of that built-in firewall. Check 'file and printer sharing' marked as exception. _________________ And after the spanking.... the oral sex!!

as bpowe said need the user accounts on the 3 machines. For example to access any of the 3 machines, the account michelle would have to show up on all 3. in control panel under user accounts. And should check the firewall since sp2 likes to throw that on. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

Any and all firewalls may be swatting down network traffic. This is what happened to me and is what finally drove me over the brink permanently. Firewalls may keep blocking traffic even when turned off (yes, ZoneAlarm, I'm talking about you). To disable the firewall, you may need to turn it off and then restart the PC without restarting the firewall. Otherwise, you need to assign each PC its own permanent IP address and allow those addresses access through the firewall.
Private IP address ranges:
10.0.0.0 — 10.255.255.255
169.254.0.0 — 169.254.255.255
172.16.0.0 — 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 — 192.168.255.255
Are you sure you have no questions about porn? |

Thanks, guys. I'll try the firewall settings (yes, I have Zone Alarm). Then I'll set up the accounts on each and see how I go from there.
Mr. Snrub, I'm darn sure I don't have any porn questions. _________________ My brain hurts.

Updating on the Home Networking crap. Now that we've moved, I decided to sign up for the broadband offer from our phone company. Our DSL modem arrived on Thursday, so I got it hooked up to the P4 (folding) computer, then had the bright idea of trying to hook up the network stuff again so that we could all use the broadband connection via internet connection sharing via the P4 computer.
Spent an extraordinary amount of time (with lots of swearing) trying to get the home network set between my two desktop pcs. Had to run Network Wizard about a million times. Got to the stage where I could access files and printers with each one. Then it got to the stage where I could see the internet connection from this one, but couldn't actually access the internet.
By that stage it was late last night (Friday) and I'd had enough. And of course, the kids had kept the connected computer occupied so I couldn't get on.
So anyway, this morning my son suggested that Zone Alarm could be blocking the other computers from accessing the internet. He was right. So rather than spending another couple of days trying to get Zone Alarm settings right, we've shut it down and turned on Windows firewall. Not happy about that, but at least 3 of us can now access the internet and I don't have to fight with the kids to get on.
I'll have another go at Zone Alarm settings later on.
With our broadband, it's a set price per month with no extra fees if you go over your limit. Your connection speed is reduced when you go over the limit - this will probably happen on a regular basis. _________________ My brain hurts.

None, jonnyv. But with all the Windoze updates, emails, music etc with 3 computers online - 4 when I get another ethernet cable - it's all going to add up.
One thing I have really missed since moving here is the radio station I listened to, Triple J. No ads to drive you nuts and good music. It's a national radio station, and it is transmitted from Townsville but I can barely get any reception here on a normal radio....tada I can listen to it online now! Love it. So, I s'pose that would add to the download limit too.

see you are a witch, you turned me into a newt again..
Also there is nothing wrong with windows firewall it will do an adequate job, as far as i'm concerened zonealarm is more trouble than its worth, even though i've earned a bit of money fixing machines and connections that were borked by ZA.
that and there's been lots of porn, on here, some removed some burried in the forums, and some with links to porn =)
