Ok, I'm having a rather interesting problem here, one of the stronger computers on my network, an almost brand new 3ghz p4 is having problems with boinc. Symptoms, fans are running moonshot rpms (like the system is working really hard), and it tends to lock up on the boot...Alot.

My settings are parallel with all 5 computers, including an old 1.8g p4 with only 256mb of ram, and none of the others seem to be having problems.

All systems are running kaspersky, lavasoft, spybot, and all have completed a full scan showing clean.

One thing of note, the computer in question has been physically relocated to another room and a wireless network card installed, but my laptop takes no issue with boinc and wireless and it is a slightly slower pentium.

Any ideas?

What brand and model of motherboard are you running?

Well the newer P4s DO run pretty hot. But the lockups shouldn't be happening. Maybe the thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink wasn't applied as well and so the chip is getting even hotter than usual. Then again I believe P4s have thermal throttling built in so that if they get too hot the automatically slow down. Could also be some bad RAM or motherboard. Who knows. Aren't computers fun??

Sir CadCam

"Cîam en des sterko" "Havi ne malesperi personoj kiu havi ne kompreno humuro"

Better esperanto:

"C^iam en la sterko" "Ne havu malesperaj personoj kiuj ne komprenas humuron"

Not sure about the motherboard, it's a rig we customized in a hurry from the Dell website, good specs, but not familiar with the specifics on the hardware. I'll get in there and get rid of the factory heatsink unit and replace it with aftermaarket and some arctic silver. Just looked at it the other day, strange design, it's a heatsink with a plastic shroud funneling airflow from a case fan in the back (looks ineffective as hell). I'll post up the results.

The reason for checking the type of motherboard is that both ASUS and Intel have recently released BIOS updates that allow the CPU fan to slow down when not needed instead of howling like a Banshee all the time.

Sacramento sounds a pretty hot location - I think I'd like my fans running fast if I lived there.

We really should have gone over to RISC chips long ago.

Yes. Install a decent distro of linux on it and watch your problems disappear (and you can even ask Bill for your money back) - I'd suggest Slackware, or if you want a more windows-like bloated install then SuSE or RedHat.

My first two computers were a Commodore 64 and then a Commodore 128. The 128 was the fist one I had with a modem. I think it was a 1200 baud. Not sure though. Both used an external 5 1/4 floppy.

I've still got my old Commodore 64 (+ tape drive) in the loft, along with an Amiga 500 that I dust off and play some of the 100+ games I have for it occasionally Smile - one day I will get beyond Deadly and become Elite
The ZX80/81's I took apart many years ago to use in hiddeous experiments in parallel processing Laughing

Ok, feeling a bit stupid for bringing this one to your collective attention, so I'll have to fess up as to why I feel stupid... There was a software glitch in the new wireless networking card, I uninstalled the whole works and now there's nothing there but the driver, happy to say she's now halfway through her first shrub and ticking like a clock. I will however look into that bios thing anyway because the fan is still not throttling down and it's driving me to drink more than usual (hey any excuse is a good excuse). The others are all happily churning through their own little shrubberies (albeit in a quieter fashion).

My next question. I currently have enough spare parts lying around to build a decent quality amd based rig, I am going to go out and find a motherboard for it tomorrow. Here's where we run into the questioning part... I want to put linux on it, I am familiar with dos through gates XP, Is there a breed of linux out there that I will be able to manipulate well enough with my limited knowlege to set up a dedicated folding machine?

I will however pop onto the web tonite and look at the 2 breeds mentioned so far in this thread, just to see if I understand them.

I bow to your wisdom.

Most established distros are pretty good at the "newbie" install nowadays.
Honestly, Slackware http://www.slackware.com is a very good one (and very well established, and not bloated, and installs without the need of one of those awful X Windows based installers) and is completely free (and downloads in only two CDs, though for most users you only need the first CD), but if you need something really easy (and also free, but more bloated) then try fedora http://fedora.redhat.com/ which is based upon Redhat (just without the expense of buying it).

Of course if you're really interested in trying a *nix, then FreeBSD http://www.freebsd.org is even cooler, is capable or running F@H, and [the added bonus] can be installed via the interweb after downloading only two floppy disk images (at work, after booting the floppies it took me almost 10 minutes to get a system downloaded and running (and that included the reboot to fire up the system from hard drive)) - and it has the added bonus of being an utterly rock solid OS.

Have fun playing, and do let me know if you need any help.

Ni!
