Today is dust bunnie day, where you actually turn off the shrubber and rid your shrubber of those pesky little dust bunnies. They tend to attack your fans first, as many are killed trying to penetrate the whirling blades, then they launch an assault on your heatsink, clogging it with reckless abandon. They managed to infiltrate my shrubber, but i got them back, and now running at least 2C cooler, minus 2 fans. No need to use water, just a clean lint-free rag and healthy lungs are all that is required.

I clean it when I open it... which is generally upgrade or change time... and I cheat... I take it to work and use the air compressor (no way am I paying what they want for "canned air").... so I know I should be cautious since moisture could be in the air but oh well....

PS: Sir Fart I do not want to know what you use! Shocked

I don't have a problem at all with pulling my old computer apart and dusting it off....but this new one scares me. I've only had it for a year, and I'm too scared to go anywhere near the inside of it. Shocked

So that one obviously hasn't been touched in at least 4 months... I'm with Sir Latch here. I clean them whenever I open them which is usually every few months when an upgade is "forced" upon me by some part failing and needing to be replaced.

... where "failing" can also mean "becoming slower than desired compared to the new stuff".

Hmm... wonder why the load average is around 2. Doh! BOINC is acting up again and running seti alongside einstein on my single CPU. Poor thing.

bah, i've had some that we didn't have dust bunnies we had dust elephants. As long as the cpu isn't overheating i tend to leave it alone collecting dust unless i have to open the case to replace a card, cable, drive.

My newest case has a dust filter, which seems to be doing an excellent job. My Dell needs help every six months or so to keep the dust wombats at bay. Makes you appreciate good airflow design . . .

You too Sad Don't you just hate it when that happens...like finding that your machine rebooted after 400 days because the case is finally completely full of fried spiders (oh, them AMD processors do cook them so well).

Fried spiders.. sounds yummy. Most of my spiders though will get chopped up before they make it near my AMD.

Reminds me of last fall when the town was being overrun by crickets. A couple of them found their way into the house every few days and one night I was sitting at my desk as usual when my computer suddenly started chirping at me. Turns out a cricket had crawled inside the case through a blank PCI slot and was happily chirping away inside. Eventually he came back out and became susceptible to the sole of my slipper.

But by now my uptime is up to 150 days! I almost had to reboot the other day. I had some problems with my stats database that was causing apache to suck up 300+ MB of RAM which in turn lead to massive swapping and general unresponsivenes. After about 30 minutes I was finally able to shut down apache although the php module had been corrupted and required a re-compile. Good times.
