For those interested but not able to join at this time, here is a screenshot:

That was just a thumbnail to be kind to the bandwidth challenged users Smile clicky for a full-size rendition.

This is running on my 1.3 GHz Pentium-M laptop. I'm not sure how accurate the progress bar is yet. It is doing its first unit. My AMD 2600+ takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 hours so the work units appear to be about twice as big as the average seti@home work unit or about 1/85 of a CPDN work unit #Crazy

They are still tweaking their validator so credits can be rather erratic. And one last note: This probably isn't the ideal project for dialup users. Initially there is a huge download (about 19 MB). If you are willing to wait that out I *THINK* the huge file actually stays on your hard drive and is used for multiple work units. But I think every once in a while it will need to grab another big hunk.

As for the screensaver...

Bruce Allen (Einstein admin) wrote:

The green and blue arms represent the three LIGO instruments (at just two sites) whose data we are currently analyzing. Blue is the two instruments (2km, 4km) in Hanford, Washington. (If you look closely at the blue arms you'll see that they are actually made up of a pair of arms: half-length and full-length.) Green is the 4km instrument in Livingston, Louisiana.

The red arms represent the GEO instrument (0.6km) in Hannover, Germany.

These detector arms are correctly oriented but are NOT to scale!

If you have set your system clock to the correct time, the instruments are shown in the correct relationship to the celestial sphere (constellations). If you watch over the period of a day you'll see that they move around the celestial sphere once in the space of 24 hours.

The purple dots represent the known pulsars, which have been detected electromagnetically. Notice that these are clustered in the plane of the Galaxy (the Milky Way), predominantly torwards the center of the Galaxy.

The red dots represent the know supernova remenants. These too are clustered towards the center of the Galaxy. Note that these are of particular interest because some of these supernovae may have left behind a pulsar or spinning neutron star.

Finally, the red bulls-eye circle and crosshairs, and the right acension and declination shown in the bottom right, indicate the current sky position being searched.

We'll add some more information to the graphics in the near future, but for the moment we're concentrating on getting the internals of the search working well!

By the way, if you go to the WORK tab and right click on a running job, you'll find a 'SHOW GRAPHICS' option. If you select this, you'll get a graphics window. Now, you can use the right and left mouse buttons (and scroll) to change the size and orientation of the celestial sphere.

Yeah, credits are erratic, and most of my WU's pop out as incorrect function. (0x1) so far 5 times out of 8.

hmm... I haven't had any of them do that on me in the 9 that I have done. You DO have to watch out for some work units though. The 3rd stage of processing usually takes a few seconds but on some work units it takes hours. The real problem is that since it was expected to take under a minute, they didn't program in any checkpoints during the 3rd stage so if BOINC suspends Einstein to run another project, it will lose all its progress on 3rd stage when it is restarted. This created an endless loop for me and I was forced to cancel the work unit lest I donate my CPU cycles to /dev/null@home Smile

Pick one.. anyone... darn out of mem errors..

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/results.php?userid=4686

But so far i haven't had any endless loops while switching every 60 mins. If there was a way to work a whole WU at once, ie: do 1 whole WU, then switch to a different project. I'd gladly set my prefs to do that.

Sir Fart- Mac shares with us everyday on IRC when and if he has taken a shower or not. It can be quite distrubing.
