Seems we always have just a handful of us for the Vote
That means, the more Projects, the more likely we are to have
one each for all different Projects
Might we consider say Six?
(Can't use Five, as THAT is right out! And there exists no
number between Three and Five)

That's a good idea. For one month it might be fun to vote only on neglected projects that haven't been potm for a year. We can have a pre-vote on which projects to vote on... Confused Ni!

You'll get more votes if you vote on voting for the pre-vote before voting for the pre-vote projects and then vote for the POTM.

....or.....

you could just limit the number of projects and have a full week to vote

What do we do if it loses? no project? all other projects?

Here's a list of CPU projects that have not been PotM this year. This cuts the list from 17 to 9. Not a huge reduction, perhaps we can pare this down more by checking if WUs are available, interest level, etc?

Asteroids WU 2,082,702
Enigma WU 12,634
Leiden Classical WU 709
NFS Number Field Sieve WU 1,752,957
OGR-28 / RC5-72 / PSA WU ?
TN-Grid WU 5,366
WCG WU by project
Yoyo WU 4,198
Vacation WU Ni!

On edit: Added # WUs ready to send.

Similar to the previous post, here are GPU projects that haven't been PotM this year, reducing the number from 11 to 6.

BURP WU 0? please verify
DNETC WU ? "
Folding WU ? "
GPUGrid WU 1 "
Moo Wrapper WU 7,586
Vacation WU Ni!

On edit: Adding # WUs doesn't work so well for GPU projects. (?)

Dunno if the two lists above will generate much interest, let us know.
On the other hand, we could also try listing the top 3 or 4 most popular in each category for a vote.
Or slow things down and vote for Project of the Quarter, lasting 3 months. Doubt our internet-addled attention spans can handle that. Razz

The problem I have is some projects have poor returns shrub-wise and I dont want to be tied into SETI for 3 months with low returns.

I already go backward down the tables now any way and low production projects is like shooting myself in the foot.

Maybe we should do projects with good points return then? A Flavour of the Month" project ie one with good points per shrubb?

So if we are looking for high return projects NFS has 3 sub projects and I did a bit of quick math with the total number of WUs completed for each subproject and the total credits per subproject and found that they give ~

36
44
130 credits per WU depending on 14e 15e or 16e subproject

PSA you can accumulate a lot and then they get dumped to your account in chunks of 100-200 points at a time normally. Enigma is also not normally known for high returns either. I have not checked the others

If someone has the time, a points per CPU time would be a good guide. There seems to be a standard Boinc amount.

Either that or a project with opp app - TN-grid seems to have one being worked out. Denis had one, but we have to await for the project to put up some more work.

For high points per shrub, BitCoin it is! Very Happy

"a project with opp app" - What's that?

Maybe someone can figger this thing out...

Boinc stats project credit comparison means
Lower than 1: the base project offers less credit per CPU second
Higher than 1: the base project offers more credit per CPU second

Looking at that we should all be doing Einstein and GPU Grid
Very Happy

Opp app is an optimised application (or client) - Seti has them https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=71867 and Poem had a good one for GPU's.
Denis had one and TN-grids is close to rolling out one see http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/forum_thread.php?id=135 Think of it as a turbo-charged client.

The boinc credit/points system explained here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOINC_Credit_System

I have problems doing most GPU PotM's.
Personal reason only... My single GPU is dated just enough (HD4870) that Poem has eliminated it, Einstien doesn't use it and Collatz has to be suspended if I need to use the computer.
Collatz is the best points for me but Milkyway runs best because of the double-precision requirement.

I agree with Sir Crackie Mind that 3 months is too much.

Bitcoin Utopia should not be a PotM at all because they are trying to phase out both CPU and GPU work in favor of ASIC's only.

I would favor having only a CPU PotM....
or even just eliminate the difference by combining....
have maybe a two months KWSN Project Favorite with ten day window to vote and a four day chance to change over....
i.e. vote on the 15th thru 25th for following two months then announce the winner in time to set CPU's to new two month project.

What Think Ye ???

After having switched my pc that holds my main GPU back to windows 10 from Linux I have unsuccessfully tried to get boinc to realize that I have Opencl drivers installed for my AMD card. It only recognizes it as a CAL device so I am not sure what is up there but it prevents me from running GPU projects. Doing multi month projects can be bad if they run out of work etc. I stopped bitcoinutopia a while ago because it felt like cheating or inflating my credit contributions.

OK so where are we going with reducing the # projects for a vote? I listed the ones that haven't been shrubbed in the past year. There is one thumbs up for NFS and one for PSA (dunno what that is). Not sure what to do at this point other than go with the 2 lists we have and see what happens? Anything we should definitely delete or add? Active GPU or CPU projects we've forgotten about that dropped off the ballot?

GoofyXGrid seems silly enough, wonder why that hasn't attracted more attention? Ni!
'
JumpinJohnny, Poem no longer uses Boinc, they now have dedicated hardware. Haven't you tried GPUGrid?
Also obviously we do have CPU PotM only projects - sometimes CPU & GPU are the same depending on the vote. Seti, PrimeGrid, and I think Einstein have all won both CPU & GPU in the same month.

Do Not Panic. The 3 month suggestion was not a serious one, Kanigit attention spans could not handle that! Laughing

For a future concept (or perhaps even this month?) I've also thought about a group candidate of Alpha-Projects. We could shrub several alpha / intermittent projects at the same time and hope we get enough work between them to enjoy consistent shrubbation. For example shrub Citizen Science Grid, Denis, and perhaps DrugDiscovery@Home (an old project that is restarting), again hoping for enough WUs between them. Back up project would probably be needed. So one line on the ballot could look like the following.
Alpha: Citizen Science Grid / Denis / Drug Discovery

Merry Christmas!

So to answer your question about PSA that stands for Project Staging Area and is part of PrimeGrid. It is run using a CLI and subprojects for Prime Grid run there before they are ported over to the Boinc portion. More info here https://primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=1222 and in other related threads in that area of the PG forum

Also see this thread in the fortress http://www.kwsnforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=16640&highlight=psa

I think we should use a random number generator to pick a letter of the alphabet, then we vote on a list of projects whose names start with the randomly selected letter of the alphabet - or all projects that start with that letter of the alphabet. If we have a letter with no projects we we either continue from last month or call it a random mayhem month. Unless the vote ends on a thursday in which case votes should be randomly applied.
