In a very close vote, Rosetta is the CPU Project of the Month for May. Two votes for Ralph, the dead test project for Rosetta, were added to two direct votes for Rosetta. A little sleazy perhaps, but as you may have noticed it's that kind of a year. Shocked

Rosetta is involved in a wide range of research related to proteins. Here are two links to Rosetta research on malaria, anthrax, HIV, Alzheimer's, influenza, and cancer.

I just noticed that by shrubbing Rosetta, KWSN will be helping that project and BOINC in the CASP12 competition. This happens every two years where teams compete to see which methods produce the most accurate protein structure models. Rosetta won first place in CASP11 two years ago.

I remember being in CASP10 I think a while back. Had an issue getting work over the last several hours but it seems to have cleared up and is moving along now

Some of these Rosetta WUs creep me out, they begin with the words "ploop_ploop." Don't even wanna know what's going with those. Shocked
I think the WUs containing the word "abinitio" might be for the CASP12 competition, not sure. Not any info about it on the Rosetta site.

From what I can tell CASP first releases units that are server only in order to test some things out and make sure that it is going to be viable for the rest of us. Then at some point they release units for the regular users like us so that many different variations can be tried.

Scientists add twists to protein designs
Biochemists from the University of Washington have engineered complex protein molecules with additional chemical bonds that make it possible to mix and match them like the base pairs of DNA.

...“Think of it this way: The principle of heredity is Watson-Crick base pairing between the two complementary strands of DNA. We invent in the paper an analogous pairing arrangement for proteins,” David Baker, director of the UW’s Institute for Protein Design, told GeekWire in an email.

...Rosetta, along with a more recently developed program called HBNet, played a key role in designing new breeds of protein molecules that include additional hydrogen bonds.

I'm crunching some WUs with "CASP 12" in the file name. Also some with "krypton." I hope that's better than the previous "ploop_ploop" WUs. Laughing

HEY! GRAPHICS! Just noticed if you click on an active WU, then click the "Show Graphics" button, it displays some pretty protein folding and an energy graph...
Einstein has this graphics feature too, not many projects still do this...

So krypton is one of the project scientists/admins over at rosetta and he is helping to make sure that the wu's get named in a way that we will know they are casp units. Rosetta has had graphics for as long as I've been crunching it. I use it to check how many models a unit gets through since rosetta gives more points if your machine manages to crunch a higher number of models because it gives them more data to use on their end
