After some discussion I've moved the SoB challenge so that it doesn't overlap with the Tour de Primes. It now starts on the first of March, rather then ending at that date. The theme is still pending. Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for the schedule.

Shouldn't the start/end time for next year's Winter Solstice Challenge be 23:03 UTC instead of this year's 17:11? Smile

So it should. Consider it changed.

Hope Christmas/Chanukkah/Kwanzaa/Festivus/Whateveryoucelebrate what enjoyable. I also hope the New Year brings good things.

Since the first challenge is just over a week off and it is a very grueling challenge, I figured I'd post about it.

It's actually two challenges. They are running both GFN and GFN-WR as two separate challenges. It is 15 days long. Both of these are very LONG units and you need some power behind to get much done.

Both use GPU, Dual Precision only and can run NVidia's CUDA, or OpenCL for either NCidia or ATI. Some NVidia cards are faster with CUDA some are faster with OpenCL. You may have to test ahead of time to figure out which.

The GFN can be run on CPU, but older CPU it will not get done in time. It also does not automatically check for Intel AVX, so if you have it you have to choose it as an option. It will not use ATI AVX as it has not been implemented correctly.

Go read the forums about this challenge to get a better picture.

I will say most NVidia 6XX cards will run better on OpenCL. Anything smaller than a 650 in the 600 series will probably NOT finish GFN-WR in time. So test and pick and choose wisely.

I personally can only run the GFN, so my 2 AVX boxes and my two NVidia will be running just those. I will not be in the WR category. My other CPUs will probably be doing the PotM.

GOOD LUCK in this challenge!

So, who is in and what are you doing?
Since I have cheap video cards I am only running Pony.
12 AVX cores and 2 NVidia 640 series cards.
Looks like the 645 will finish units in about 33-35 hours
The 640 in 41-44 hours
The AVX cores in about 175-200 hours.

This means I should do somewhere between 30 and 40 units total during the 15 day challenge barring any abnormalities which have seem to hit me the last several challenges. Each unit is currently coming in around 30000 challenge points and will definitely go up slowly.

I could have run 12 more non-AVX cores and gotten possible 12 more units in, but I am running those over on Asteroids.

My SP ATI is doing Collatz.

I have one GT640 on the Pony Express Open CL version, looks like it will take about 35 hours each. I ain't touching the Stallion Edition - I ran one "world record" WU a while back and I think it took over a month, not sure 500K makes up for that...
8 CPU cores currently on Asteroids...

Almost 24 hours in, KWSN is on the board in the Pony Express at 30th place.
Obviously no one has points yet in the Stallion Edition.

I should have stallion points in about 24 hours. WR shrubs take me 56 hours and change per pop.

I am leaving my cores over on da roids cause it would take them forever to run a gfn and space rocks are cooler anyways. My GPU is being a nerd over at collatz since its only SP and ATI, so good luck and coconuts to you loonies chasing horsies

Congrats Yankton for putting us on the board in the Stallion part of the challenge. Three days in and my GPUs have send back 3 units so far, all as first, so if there is a GFN, I would be the finder. 5 of us currently have returned work in the Pony Challenge.

Good luck to everyone. A little less than 12 days to go.

I would have been there earlier but it didn't report it until I got home 8 hours later. Happily chugging along on a second one now. I'll still get beat out by the high end dual gpus though. I might be able to do a shrub faster, but they run 2 at a time.

KWSN has moved up from 30th to 18th in the Pony Express, six Knights have points.

We're 12th in the Stallion Edition with Yankton the only Knight on the board so far. What a stud!

After a few of us complained about genefer selecting the wrong application (wanting to run sse3 instead of avx for example) on a linux machine, the primegrid devs changed the account setting setup. If you run genefer on linux box please go update your account settings to use the correct app for your machine!

With a little over 30 hours left on the challenge and my two video cards take more than 30 hours to finish units, my last two units will be finishing within the next 15 hours. Unsure if I will make the top 100, as I am sitting in the low 90s now and I am sure a lot of CPUs will be dropping off their last units over this period of time.

Tough challenges this month. It is nice to see we had participation in both. Yankton and Grebuloner are both currently in the top 100 on the Stallion challenge. We have a bunch of us in the Pony challenge and 3 of us currently in the top 100, with William007 doing an awesome run.

Over the past year our team has not been as high in the team ranks as we used to be. It's OK, our name is usually still in the top 20. For our team size this is pretty awesome.

Make sure you units get reports before 18:00UTC on the 18th or they do not count towards the challenge.

Again, nice job team. February has no challenge, the next one has no name currently but runs 1-16-MAR and is the SoB LLR project. Another 15 day grueling hard challenge. These unit times currently have an average CPU time of over 218 hours. For CPU this is slower than the GFN short by over 50 hours (average approx 167 hours). AVX CPUs will do these in about 1/2 that time.

I have one last WR unit to submit (will happen late this evening) then I should be able to knock out several more regular genefer shrubs before the time runs out. Assuming seti submits no more we should reclaim 16th in stallion. Especially if Grebuloner has another one up his sleeve as well.

With the new OCLCuda, my lower end CUDA kicked the Genefer units pretty nicely. So I decided to take the fast CUDA card and just try a WR on it (with just the CUDA application these would run past their due date. Now I can finish one in about 2-3 days less than the due date on my faster one. The slow one would still go over the due date. Nice to know I can now get another WUProp application under my belt, slowly. Plus those WR give over half a million in credit for each returned unit, for about 18 days of crunching.

So the GTX645 can finish WR units in time with OCL, but the 640 still cannot. I would never had finished one in time for the challenge, but it still feels good to be able to crunch those units now.
