First off if you use BAM or other 3rd party manager this post is null and void for you, but I refuse to use those.

What bothers me is adding a new project and having to play with preferences to get everything back to where they were. BOINC is so dumb in this arena.

BOINC shares computing preferences across all projects (I wish this could be changed, but it does have some nice advantages), the problem is starting a new project is that those preferences are set to default. If you have special settings (as I am sure most of us do), those settings get reset with each new project you attach to, then you have to manually go back and fix. Since I use all 4 venues due to the types of machines I have, this screws up all 4 venues.

How to avoid this? - Here is what I try to do.
Create the account on the website manually (nor through BOINC). Then create all the venues you use. Go back to a current running project, adjust all the computing preferences (easiest thing I do is toggle the file verification, then toggle it back). Then I make all the machines communicate with that project as it is the last known change done across all projects. Then I attach the machine(s) to the new project and the preferences should follow.

Those of us with multiple mixed machines (Non-HT, HT, Nvidia, ATI, single and double precision, etc) that cause you to make sure that each machine does what you want it to do and you do not like the 3rd parties controlling your work, this is the easiest way to attach to a new project.

I actually wish there were more venues. It's hard to work with 4 with the mess I have. I also do not want to create local preferences because then I have to change them when I am doing adjustments.

I know you will ask, "why not just give in and use BAM or other 3rd party manager"? Being in computer security for so long I have some distrusts for 3rd parties making changes to my machines remotely. What if one of those sites got hacked and went through and started controlling your machines? Moved them to a project that may be bad for everyone (worm type virus) and start infecting your machines along with everyone else, plus maybe even project's machines, causing all kinds of hell? I know, somewhat paranoid, but I like having better control over my machines.

I also know that 3rd parties make changes to my machines daily. NNTP, Virus software, other software that automatically updates itself, etc. It's one less layer I have to worry about. Plus not all projects work well with them.
