WCG/HCC1 does not support CUDA, only OpenCL Rolling Eyes

For this GPU nooob, what's the difference between Open CL and Cuda or ATI? Less efficient? I notice many Nvidia cards are approved for that WCG sub-project. Mine is not, but I'm testing it and it seems to be OK. Is Poem in the same boat?

AFAIK, CUDA and OpenCL are programming languages in which GPU's are computing applications, AMD/ATI and NVIDIA are manufacturers.

CUDA is proprietary language of NVIDIA, so only its GPU's are capable to compute applications written in this language.

OpenCL is open language supported mainly by AMD/ATI GPU's, but also some of NVIDIA's are capable to compute apps in it, but they are not very good (that is why WCG/HCC1, which app is written in OpenCL 1.1 could be shrubbed mainly by AMD/ATI GPU's, but also by some of NVIDIA's).

Imagine me as NVIDIA GPU. I am fluent in Slovak (CUDA), but poor in English (OpenCL, lower version). On the other hand, you (as AMD/ATI GPU) are great in English (OpenCL, newer version), but do not speak Slovak at all (CUDA) #ni-2

Cheers #ni-1

Edit to add: Your NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 is NOT in the list of excluded GPU's for WCG/HCC1 Very Happy

Heh, thanks for dumbing it down to languages, makes more sense now... And YAAAAY! I read it backwards Embarassed my card is NOT EXCLUDED in this Members Only Club 54 Party...

Well I'm leaning towards that WCG sub-project (even though prolly not many knights can shrub it) 'cuz, as branjo stated elsewhere, that project is gonna complete in less than 90 days, a last chance for a KWSN blaze o' glory? Wink

Does WCG use it's own version of BOINC? The site seems very weird about downloading the software directly from them.

Yes, there is the official WCG version of BOINC (the one that has been approved as maximum secure possible in the past), but members are unofficially encouraged to upgrade to version 7.x.x, which is capable to shrub HCC1 GPU application.

For shrubbing with app_config.xml it is anyway needed 7.0.40 or higher.

I am using the most recent Alpha 7.0.52 on Win (HCC1 GPU and all CPU's) and 7.0.31 on Mac (CPU only, still no GPU app for Macs) w/o errors.

So, you can use whatever BOINC you have already installed, or you can upgrade to version 7 #ni-1

Just a few days left to the month and we sit at a tie. I'm going to stay on Collatz even if Poem is picked cause Poem does funny things to my systems.
