Hi!
I read an article in the science section of the german news site "www.spiegel.de". They are reporting about a language where "Ni" is an actual word:
Example question:
"Ninthu warra kaurna payanthi?"
("Do you understand Kaurna?")
Answer:
"Nii" ("yes")
Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaurna_language
So what's where the original Knights ended up...

Ah, but in Hungarian, it is an Interjection!
An example given was "Lo! (Or perhaps, 'Look!') Here it is!",
paraphrased as "Itt van ni!"
I think it springs from the Old Latin myself...
Supporting that was "Etymology
From Old Latin nei, from Proto-Indo-European *néy (“not”). Cognates include Gothic 𐌽𐌴𐌹 (nei), Lithuanian nei, Old Church Slavonic ни (ni) and Old Irish ní."
