Here's the projects I've joined so far:
http://www.allprojectstats.com/showuser.php?id=aba16ba1f5bb2bd84755090726fd1205

Of which Collatz, POEM, SETI, DistRTGen and WCG's Help Conquer Cancer apparently have ATI apps I can run. Of these, Collatz and DistRTGen feel like pointless pea-counting exercises to me (of which Collatz gains me points really quickly; DistRT, rather less so. Took me 8 hours to finish a GPU WU and I don't even know how many points I'd get as validation apparently takes a long time at that project)

So my question to you is: what's another good scientific project I can attach to? I could attach to Moo for the GPU POTM but that feels like another pea-counting project to me and besides, I haven't even joined KWSN on any project yet Embarassed If you guys come up with a good suggestion I'll start joining KWSN on the new projects I join #ni-1

I'm not running a 5670, but using a 5770, 2x 5870s, & GTX570.

Yes, Moo! is useless and pointless as far as scientific value, only good for the credits if that's one of your goals.

DistRTGen is much faster on Nvidia GPU's, you decide if you're comfortable generating rainbow tables.

POEM's has good apps for either GPU, pays very well and does real science. It's currently my favorite GPU project but work units are snapped up as fast as they're generated.

You can join the team on projects you're already running, and move freely at any time.

Gotta run now, welcome and NI!

I seem to be getting deluged by wcg help conquer cancer tasks. Cant complain, they complete in ~20min. each.

Having some problems with gpu tasks in general
1. when a gpu task is paused and resumed sometimes the time elapsed for the task resets to zero. Im told that if the task progress also resets to zero (because of a lack of checkpoints) this would be normal, but sometimes this is not the case either. Some DistrRT WUs appear to be failing validation because of these time accounting problems. Either this, or

2. My gfx card is running too hot. I've tried cleaning the cooler but I couldn't unscrew it so I couldn't get at the heatsink. In the meantime I tried installing TThrottle but it couldn't recognize any gpu apps (it recognized my distrrt app, but tagged it as cpu only) nor throttle them. So for now Im underclocking my card. Im also not going to take any more distrRT jobs.

Any idea how to solve the above problems? Idea

The best way to clean your card out is with an Air Compressor. The kind you use with Air Tools. use the attachment that is for blowing off the floor.

Also, you should run your fan speed up to 100%. You may be able to do this with your driver program, If not then you should download some freeware. I use MSI Afterburner for my ATI cards and EVGA Precision for Nvidia... #ni-1

If you take decision to shrub this project (it is not the best "paying" one, but in terms of scientific value and staff support it is the best by miles), I can guide you how to grow your production through increase of number of tasks running concurrently (default number is 1 per GPU using 1 whole CPU thread) - currently I am running 12 concurrent GPU tasks on 3 CPU threads (HD 7750 + i7-3770).

Welcome on board and #ni-2

Don't think my GPU can take it Embarassed GPU-Z shows it pretty much running 100% all the time except at two "stops" in the middle and at the end of a task. I experimented with the new 7.0.4x client which allowed easy config of the number of CPUs and GPUs used thus:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8051#46666

It was more helpful with POEM and SETI astropulse.

I tried pegging the fan at 100%, the temperature didn't budge Mad

Oh and I've joined KWSN on all my projects #ni-1

You are not saying what GPU drive are you using, but if you are running W7 64-bit, I would recommend to go with 12.11. Beta8 with .Net 4.0 support from here http://www2.ati.com/drivers/beta/AMD_Catalyst_12.11_Beta8_NET4.exe (the latest Beta driver is 11, but AFAIK there are some problems with it)

Cheers #ni-1

Welcome aboard Joe Bloggs!

We came up with the following list of GPU projects and codes which might help you identify other projects suitable for your hardware.

Collatz / ATI+ CUDA SP
DistrRTgen / CUDA+ ATI SP
Donate / ATI V
Einstein / CUDA+ ATI SP
Folding@Home / ATI+ CUDA SP
GPUGrid / CUDA
Milky Way / ATI CUDA DP
Moo Wrapper/ ATI+ CUDA SP
POEM / OpenCL SP
Prime Grid / CUDA+ ATI SP*
PPRNet / CUDA+ OpenCL V SP*
SETI / CUDA+ OpenCL SP

Codes:
V = Never been shagged as PotM before.
CUDA = Runs on CUDA GPU's
ATI = Runs ATI GPU's
ATI+ CUDA = Runs both, but better on ATI
CUDA+ ATI = Runs both, but better on CUDA
DP = Double precision cards required
SP = Single or double precision cards
SP* = Single, but a sub-project may require double precision

Thanks for contributing shrubberies to the KWSN forest!

As far as heat goes...if you have a mid-tower (or smaller) case, sometimes the ambient air temp within the case can be the big issue.
I recommend getting - at minimum - a higher powered rear-chasis fan that can move 90+CFM.
I have a preference for the Scythe "Ultra Kaze" fans (120mm x 38mm). They move 133.6 CFM!
They are hefty - 50% thicker than the standard 120x25 fans.
My largest rig has 9 of these (damn near a hover-craft unto itself). Cool
And if room allows, there is usually space to mount a 120mm or 140mm in the bottom of the case - make that fan pull air into the case (not exhaust).
Also, if your side-panel is not ventilated (with a fan or two), consider modding it or getting an aftermarket panel.

I can't help too much with ATI/Radeon - I use Nvidia cards Embarassed

Hmmm, never heard of Donate@Home, and was not aware of a GPU app for WCG.

Can anyone provide more info on these projects?
What are the average points per day on these projects for some specific GPU?
Are there linux clients?

http://donateathome.org/join.php

On a 6870 it took 27 minutes to give me 5,900 credits. Ran at a temp slightly higher than PG does on my card so within normal range

Is that the project where they have you hunting "bitcoins"? And who will honour these "bitcoins"? Whoever is honouring these "bitcoins", why not just donate directly? :S

Just got TThrottle working. I had to uncheck and recheck "Connect with BOINC client" under the BOINC tab.

Did you guys know a neat trick with TThrottle? You can use it to suspend the GPU transparently when you're at the computer without losing all work after a checkpoint like BOINC manager's suspend function does:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8139

Isn't it neat? #ni-1

It's apparently difficult to donate directly from some countries, plus there's no shortage of fools who wouldn't donate $5 but will spend $1000's on hardware and electrtricy chasing worthless credits. Laughing

Yes we used to have that WCG sub-program on that list, which we use to vote for the GPU PotM. However it was taken off the ballot due to complaints from Knights of the GPU. I don't recall what they were, but perhaps it's time to reconsider, should it be added back on the GPU PotM ballot?

We have taken it out of the list when they have had few days outage in WU's. Now the Wu's are flowing w/o problems and the estimate is that there is enough work for next 4 months.

Cheers and #ni-2
