|
|
The points today have been VERY low for F@H.
I ran around my place a few times throughout the day just to check if all of my machines were still running.
Either a Stanford collection server (one or more) is not working right, or they handed out REALLY crappy WUs over the holiday.
I suspect both things happened.
Some of the SMP (CPU) WUs are down-right nasty...taking > 24h to complete and woefully small points.
On top of that, the algorithms they are using may be so tightly optimized that it doesn't give much room for other work...
...like servicing the occasional GPU request.
Even the WUs for GPU are running excessively long. Causality?

Nobody wanted to be like the poor guy at SETI and go kick a server on Thanksgiving!

Have you got the same problem as this guy? see http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=23065 _________________ a monster can be excused for his behaviour . . . The problem is not how a monster could do it, but how a human being did it.

Sounds kinda similar, but I haven't specifically noticed 70xx projects.
I just checked. Everything I am currently running is 80xx.
But I do remember one WU recently that I had that had a TPF > 15 mins!
That one took a little over 24 hours to complete (SMP) for a mere ~2300 points.
The base points on that WU was something like 640.
It was running on my FX-8350, too! (all 8 cores @ 4.0GHz)
Had it been running on one of my other CPUs, it would have taken 1.3 to 1.7 days to complete - and given less points.
I think it had more to do with some servers that were down for "scheduled" maintenance.
http://folding.typepad.com/news/2012/11/folding-servers-vsp12a-g-will-be-down-for-maintenance.html
These kinds of things never go as smoothly as planned.
They were probably down for a couple of DAYS (instead of a couple of hours). _________________ Click here for...KWSN F@H team summary at EOC

Do n't know if it's relevant, but I'm running GPU project 8044 and it's only max 80% load instead of the 99% on previous WUs. _________________ a monster can be excused for his behaviour . . . The problem is not how a monster could do it, but how a human being did it.

I don't pay attention too closely to the projects that come thru.
But I have noticed that some WUs really heat-up the GPUs while others are less intense.
OH - I just looked. I actually have one 8044 running now.
It's running 99% on a 384-core GTX-560Ti (882MHz).
The TPF is 2 min 19 sec.
There may be differences within the project (the PRCG) that dictate different algorithm usages based in the input-data.

I just got done reworking my oldest shrubber. UUGGH! What a chore!
1) Changed the CPU cooling from air to water (Thermaltake Bigwater 760)
2) Cleaned & re-thermaled my GPUs
--- Of course I found huge gobs of dried-out gunk in both GTX-560Ti's! I wonder how these cards don't burn-out within the first week!
--- One of my GPUs had a fan that seized-up (they both have two fans each), so I'm ordering a set of replacement fans. I'm sure the other fan will stop within a few weeks or so.

Be nice to your shrubbers and they will be nice to you!

Tried 9600 GT with GPU client and hit 100% fan & 100 C !
I'm frying my breakfast on the case ... mmm ... fried egg and thermal paste residue ... drool.

WHOA! 100c? Seriously?
Since the 9600 is probably WAY out of warranty, have you considered carefully taking it apart, cleaning it, and re-thermaling it?
I realize that these older GT cards run hot...but 100c...cheeze-n-crackers!
I would expect (at 100% utilization) to see around 85~90c as the top-end of the thermal envelope.
But the good news is the GT class cards were made quite durable (especially if you got a BFG brand).
EDIT: One bit of advice: Don't use Arctic-Silver!
Use the thermal grease from Antec or SIIG...or even Ceramique works well.
Arctic-Silver dries-out (cures) and you're left with a layer of brick mortar after a while.
The ones I mentioned are non-curing. I always use the Antec brand...ALWAYS!
And I only cover the chip (not the heat-sink) as thinly as possible.
I used to have a couple of GTS-250s, and after the temps started to climb (after a few months of folding), I re-thermaled them...and dropped the temps by about 12~16c. _________________ Click here for...KWSN F@H team summary at EOC

If you know someone with an air compressor that should do the trick. Mine are running in the 70's now but one of the 9800GTX+ hit 105 last week.
I went at it with Q-tips but 12cfm at 90 psi works WAY better... _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

Can of compressed air empty, and only arctic silver to hand, but temps dropped to 75 C after removal of dust and 1/2 inch of old thermal paste.
OC time!
Now running Boinc & F@H GPUs at the same time ...

Cans are nearly worthless. Get the kind that you can take Lug Nuts off with. I'm not joking. You are not gonna believe how much dust comes out

Scraping-out the old thermal 'cement' does work wonders, doesn't it?
I thought of using a dental pick (the metal ones that dentists use), but I didn't want to scratch surfaces.
I remove the bulk of the stock mortar with 91% isopropyl alcohol, and finish cleaning up with 100% pure acetone.
I found 100% "cotton rounds" [lint-free] at the local drug-store.
BTW: The cotton-rounds are most commonly used as make-up removal pads, but are VERY useful for this kind of component cleaning.
