Is this the beginning of the end of PCs as we know them?

I actually think that is a good thing, to see another chip manufacture. Back in the day when we had more than a couple, it made the manufactures more diligent and prices more stable. It also promotes newer technology because someone will come up with a new subset and then everyone will want to make it better.

I lived in the days when we had Intel, AMD, Cyrix, DEC and others. There was good competition between them. Bringing that back could really make the new computer CPUs (and GPUs) have a new life.

I agree. More competition = better innovation.
Additionally, one would hope that competition would yield lower end-consumer prices.

Unfortunately we've seen some smaller, innovative companies (in decades past) that DID have good ideas, but their emerging tech was priced too far above what early-adopters were willing to pay, and thus couldn't get enough "traction" in the marketplace.
Not enough traction = here-today-gone-tomorrow, flash-in-the-pan tech.
Very few people are willing to spend hundreds (or thousands) for something that will become antiquated within just a year or two.

I have been hearing about the end of the PC since 1995.

It's a pretty obvious move. ARM architecture become more and more popular. In some way it already hurts PC alot.
