|
|
You can tell we're near a national election in the U.S.; a BIG vote count in the GPU category this time. By only a 2 vote margin over GPUGrid, the GPU Project o' da month is Einstein.
Quote: | Einstein@Home uses your computer's idle time to search for weak astrophysical signals from spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors, the Arecibo radio telescope, and the Fermi gamma-ray satellite. Einstein@Home volunteers have already discovered more than three dozen new neutron stars, and we hope to find many more in the future. Our long-term goal is to make the first direct detections of gravitational-wave emission from spinning neutron stars. Gravitational waves were predicted by Albert Einstein almost a century ago, but have never been directly detected. Such observations would open up a new window on the universe, and usher in a new era in astronomy.

I might be able to throw something on Einstein while Simap is on going, but after that, it seems P3DN has been awaken, so it's gonna be balls to bone POEM in the time comming after. That might be when some CPU is opened up for the other POTEM however, depending what else is going on... _________________

I forget, does Einstein favor ATI or Nvidia?
IIRC, uses GPU+1CPU core, right?

It takes both ATI and NVidia. It favors NVidia.
My ATI cards use minimal CPU when doing it. For example one does them in less than 3000 seconds run time, but CPU time is like 500 seconds. It's actually GPU +~.25 CPU.
Reviewing NVidia cards it on the site it looks about the same (maybe just a little more CPU so closer to .30).
Oh and if you hadn't figured it out, I am in with my ATI cards. My NVidia won't be there for a while because it's busy on a GFN WR which should be done somewhere around the 11th, then it will move over. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

On my PhenomIIx6 with HD5870:
using <cpus>5</ncpus>, WUs take ~45min.
using <cpus>6</ncpus>, WUs take 8+hrs.
My older 5870 apparently doesn't support OpenCL.

Computer becomes unusable with this project. Keyboard lags and becomes unresponsive when I run Einstein.

When I have tried to run 2 Wu's simultanously on 1 GPU my iMac has frozen . Now I am testing it with 1 WU at the time, which takes ca. 3 hours to finish. For 500 BOINCbucks _________________

Additionally it takes 0.5 core per unit so I can only run 3 CPU Wu's. If by chance Boinc runs 4 CPU Wu's it just stops production, Gpu use falls to 0%. And, it only runs around 50% usage on each GPU core so it is not efficient at all. Milky says it takes 0.5 CPU as well but it allows 4 CPU Wu's to run and runs at 98% GPU on both cores with no lag or other problems.
I knew there was a reason I didn't run Einstein anymore.... _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

Einstein is only using .2 CPUs on mine (reported), but runs fast as well as running 4 CPU tasks. Maybe you forgot to feed it?

Un-check 'Use GPU when computer is in use' under >preferences>processor usage.

Well, my cheap NVidia finished the Genefer WR unit about 3 days past the deadline. I still would have been the first to drop the unit off, but someone with a faster card than mine took 32 days to drop of their unit. It was validated (since it's not easy to understand Genefer I cannot tell if it's a Prime, but that would be a miracle).
I moved that card over to Einstein to see how well she works there. It's very slow on MW. It is a DP card, but it's the lowest end 6xx card and the DP is handicapped in all the 6xx cards, so the card is slow and not all that hot for DP projects. So Einstein being SP it should do better there. I heard it does good on a couple of PPR projects and may move it there eventually. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)
