Malware inserted on PC production lines
In a report detailing its work to disrupt the Nitol botnet, Microsoft said the criminals behind the malicious program had exploited insecure supply chains to get viruses installed as PCs were being built.

The viruses were discovered when Microsoft digital crime investigators bought 20 PCs, 10 desktops and 10 laptops from different cities in China.

Four of the computers were infected with malicious programs even though they were fresh from the factory.

Microsoft set up and ran Operation b70 to investigate and found that the four viruses were included in counterfeit software some Chinese PC makers were installing on computers.

Heck, as to their crime detection whatever, I'd settle for Microsoft releasing software that is a bit more secure and isn't renowned in oh so many security blog sites for it's wide gaping wholes that makes it oh so suspeptible... But that's another matter entirely #ni-1

True some of it has to do with user demand for the OS and it's availability (though many times UNIX based systems are higher value targets in that they're manytimes servers housing some extra sensitive information like bank records), but how many viruses does one hear about which can infect UNIX vs. Windows? And yes I'm are that there are such things as route kits... But just in general along with all the security advirories one tends to get bombarded with, and the seeming impression it leaves on what is more vulnerable...

It makes me wonder (sometimes) if there isn't some kind of de facto "cat-n-mouse" arrangement going on between hardware/software vendors and the malware creators.

Imagine if an OS was available that was totally secure & impervious to viruses, hijacking, etc...
...a lot of AVS companies would be out of business!

BTW - have you seen RFC3514 IPv4 'Malicious' bit ? #Rofl

I kid not when I say that back in the day I ended up with not 1, but 2 computer viruses that persisted install after install. Finally after scanning my instillation media, it turned out the viruses came from my MS-Dos 6.22 floppy disk 1, and Windows 3.11 floppy disk 5. Now here's the interesting part of it all, the whole bit came with a new computer, shrink wrapped, included with their own boxes, MS liscense agreements, official seals, and all. And I always kept the floppy disk's write protect tab kept in the read only position, so nothing could inadvertently happen to the floppies, which would include a virus getting written to/transfered on. The viruses musta come MS direct Laughing

Now many have called Windows 95 malware before (and the less that can be said about ME, the better) #ni-1 But that, was ridiculous Surprised

There used to be a spoof on the Windows 95 startup screen which was Winblows 95, with Microsoft Bug! instead of Microsoft Plus! also. Oh, and one many might remember Very Happy

Edit: Seems the tags to embed youtube videos on the forum here, instead of just giving the url link isn't working, as neither the [utube] [/utube] or the [yt] [/yt] tags seem to do anything with the proper part of the link above linked...
