Hi knights,

I would like to purchase a shrubber and dedicate it 100% to WCG. Finally found a store which at least partially understood what it is DC about. They sent me following offer, and I would like to know if you think this could shrub WCG 24/7 @ 100% CPU and GPU (and, of course, some other projects) and not ruin my family budget with very high power bills :

- MB: Intel® DH61BE soc.1155 iH61 DDR3 mATX USB 3.0 PCIe GL
- Processor: Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.40GHz 8MB LGA1155 (or you think Intel Core i5-3570 Ivy Bridge 3.40GHz 6MB LGA1155 would be enough?)
- Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 612S ,skt. 1155/1156/1366/775/AM2/AM3.silent 900-1300rpm
- RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9 Hyper X Blu (2x)
- GPU: ASUS HD7850-DC-1GD5 1GB/256-bit D-Sub, 2xDVI, HDMI, DP
- SSD: Kingston 120GB SSDNow V+ 200 Series SATA3, 2.5" Upgrade Bundle Kit Retail
- Case: CoolerMaster case miditower Elite 334U, ATX
- Power source: i-Tec Power Gamer 700W, active PFC
- OS: Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

WCG GPU crunching is possible on Wins only, but I would also like to be able to run Ubuntu in case I skip to other projects.

If you're worried about your electricity bill shooting through the roof, have you thought of a laptop. You'll need a cooling pad or something extra though.

I'm always a fan of building my own PCs. But it looks like that shrubber could shrub some shrubs.

Other things to consider...
The Ivy Bridges seem pretty good on power, but the ****K versions are overclockable. I'm not familiar with the iH61 motherboards but usually the H series cannot do overclocking, so paying for the extra of the ****K may be pointless. If you want to overclock, make sure your motherboard can do it, otherwise opt for the slightly cheaper, but just as powerful i7 3770.

The i7 CPUs give you 4 cores with up to 8 virtual cores. The i5 CPUs give you just the 4 cores.

If all you are are doing is BOINC, you won't need 120 gig of hard drive. But if you want to start adding other stuff, like games and heavy programs along with pictures and silly movies and drinking songs, you may want to add on a traditional hard drive for extra storage.

Have someone build you a unit around that. You can get a sever MB capable of holding 4 of these if you love giving money to the power company.

But the MOBO is over $250.00 as well. You would be better off buying a reasonably priced Quad core and a couple really good Video cards....

For purely shrub-crunchin', I'd go for a mobo with an i7 (8 WUs at once) and 1 GPU but with slots for more. See how much it costs to run, then add on cards as money (and spouse!) will allow. Lots of RAM too and would n't be too picky about hard-drive as it'll hardly be used (could use just a USB memory stick or a CD in fact).

Brought it home today. My precious

Took non-overclocable i7-3770 3.4 GHz with Cooler ARCTIC Freezer i30, ASUS HD7750 1GB, Cooler Master HAF 912 as Gemjunkie recommended, Mobo with 4 RAM slots, 32 GB max and slots for some more GPU's as you recommended (ASUS P8Z77-V LX) and smaller 60 GB SSD.

Thanks knights, you saved me lot of nerves I might lose with OP configuration (and this one is even cheaper )

Yeah - Linux is a great idea.
Far less overhead than Win, so...faster throughput.

Problem: not really user friendly yet. Ubuntu comes close, though.

Linux Mint is receiving quite a bit of attention.
It is supposed to be one of the most stable/reliable/efficient distros, but...
...that means it doesn't support a vast range of hardware.

I'm very much thinking I will be switching over to Linux when Win-7 support is dropped.
Win-8 seems horrid, and there's too much complaining from the "power-user" (and uber-geek) crowds that lend credence to known & potential short-comings.

Don't start giving me second thoughts. I am seriously considering skipping Windows and plopping the $100 back into components for my next build. After looking around at what I'm using, I really don't need anything from Windows.
