I had it error out on the download of 1 out of 4 so i only ended up with 3 so far to run, but at the rate it crunches on my shrubber that may be a good thing. 88% done after 19 hrs 42 mins with 2 hrs 35min left to go

These things don't move very fast Confused

Well my one box only has 4 gig of RAM and can't handle it so it'll be running on one machine only-it has 8 gig

Finding the same. Keeps coming up with low virtual memory error, waiting for memory and running on only 2 of the 5 cores enabled for the project.

Unfortunately, I don't have an OS that will allow more than 4Gb of memory to be installed even though the MB will take up to 32Gb.

Sorry guys gonna switch back to RNAWorld, Malaria Control and dDM for this month.

That's weird... I have a triple-core processor and 3 Gig of Ram which shrubs 3 Cosmos at a time with no problem... I have Win 7 64 bit, but haven't seen the need to increase it beyond 3 Gigs for any project...

Same, this laptop only has 2 GB of RAM, and a dual core proc (core 2 duo), and has no problems with memory errors on win7 64-bit... They might be running into probs with a 32-bit OS (which does have the 4 GB limit, not only on RAM but RAM + swap space also, as a 32-bit number can't address more thenn 4 GB of memory pages without doing some stuff like the Xeon's 36-bit add ressing), or perhaps having more cores. Still 4 GB with a 4 proc core, one would expect to be able to handle it... But if they have 8 cores and a 32-bit OS, and given that even with a swap file the OS couldn't address more then 4 GB total between all of physical RAM, swap space, and also graphics RAM, that would like like 512 MB to core, and could be a prob...

How many cores, and is this a 32-bit OS? If the answer to 2 is yes, then though it will technically take 4 GB of memory, this might pose a problem as the address space would be totally maped out to your physical memory, leaving no space for your paging file, or the discrete/dedicated memory on your graphics card also counts against the 4 GB upper limit (it's still memory in the computer, whch needs addressing). Might need to upgrade to a 64-bit OS.... As to the first question, divide the total memory by the number of cores (remember you're runnning 1 shrub on each core, so memory per core is significant for ths...), and see what you're left with. If you could somehow restrict it to only running on 1 or 2 cores, and not on all available, this might help...

Check Boinc preferences, the default is to use only 50% of memory while computer is in use. Increase that to 80-90% if you're not doing anything needing much memory.

Crunching Cosmology has somehow split my cpid. Confused

I changed the email address and detached, will open a new account when cpid sorts itself out. Rolling Eyes

Its as Nuro says.

6 cores

Total Physical Memory 4,096.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 2.40 GB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 5.32 GB

Number crunch that little lot and you have less than 500Mb per WU available.

I have done everything I can to free up resources for BOINC including using that little know thing in System Properties on the advanced tab. Adjust for best performance. That gets rid of all the drop shadows, fade in/out's, animations and so on that windows gives as part of the package.

I've even split my page file across two drives. Nothing is getting around the lack of memory for running Five Cosmo's at a time, two is the max it will handle without slowing down and affecting everything else.

This project is just gonna have to wait until I can get Win 7 with 64 bit so I can slap some extra memory in the box.

I have win 7 so no problems with crunching However, 16.5 hours for 420 points SUCKS!!!

Cosmo used to be a good payer then they started this crap. It doesn't have to have blasting credit but my machine is no slacker and this is a waste of power. I will see how it goes for a while but I will likely give this up.

There dosn't seem to be any standard WU time length. Unless this is caused by my machine not having enough memory and being overloaded with processing demands.

The results that I have returned range between 7hrs 15 mins and a couple of mins over 17 hrs.

All that time on the longest WU so far, for a standard 420 credits.

There is a similar problem with RNAWorld cmsearch XXL WU's. The difference is that at least you can elect not to have any of those WU's on your machine via the preferences section on their website.

Anyway last cosmo WU's spinning down. Says is should complete in the next 3 hours. Lol Thats what the one said yesterday and it took over 9 hours.

Hummm

It was 3.5 hrs ago I posted Last Cosmo unit spinning down. It said just shy of 3 hrs to completion.

Current expected completion time 2hrs 00mins 16 seconds. So its taken 3.5 hrs to do less than 1 hr of processing

The WU has already taken almost 14 hrs to run.

Its got the box to itself. So why is it taking so long?

6 cores would be your problem then, as this would leave less then 1 GB per core. Try seeing if there's a means to limit the project to run on just 2 cores, and get something light to run on the other 4...

You could also try a 64-bit version of Windows, if you can get ahold of it. In this case, set the min and max sizes of the pageing file to 6 GB (which would be 1.5x your 4 GB RAM). This should help, though I still think 6 cores on that memory would be tight, 4 would seem more reasonable given Windows and whatever you might end up with running in the background.... Now note, for a 6 GB pageing file (which with the physical memory, would be a total memory set of 10 GB), you would HAVE TO have a 64-bit version of Windows, as it's above the 4 GB upper limit....

An OEM copy, or if you can purchase a per seat liscense from your employment place (getting whatever corporate discounts they have available to them) might be cheaper then buying it retail; but you'd have to speak with the IT guys to see if they'd be willing. If you ever have to take any work home or do any off your laptop, they might be willing to provide this to you at cost to them.... Do price compare vs. what you could pay online though (and no I'm not suggesting any retailer that would be less then legit, but you can avoid taxes and get a bit of a discount through an OEM purchase that way) Wink
