|
|
Just to mention a new project: Surveill@Home (http://surveill.dei.uc.pt/surveill)
Surveill@Home is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to conduct end-to-end fine-grained monitoring of web sites.
The aim of the project is to deploy a large infrastructure to support thousands of probes monitoring the Internet.
Each probe repeatedly performs a pre-defined set of web transactions on web-sites, performing active web monitoring from the last mile.
The proposed approach allows us to obtain important results on end-user visible failures and performance statics.
With the help of the volunteer community we will achieve this ambitious goal.
We are welcoming BOINC users who want to participate in our initial monitoring effort.
Thanks for your support. _________________

their upload/download server is currently disabled according to http://surveill.dei.uc.pt/surveill/server_status.php
So the point of this project is to spy on websites?
EDIT: Also there is not a Knights team for this yet _________________

Wow even a project the Knights will not attempt. Then that mean it must be really kinky and not in a good way.

Sounds a bit Big Brother-ish to me.
Maybe someone should sign up, create a KWSN team, crunch one WU and quit. _________________

Being mentored by Milkyway?
I suppose whoever's in charge of such things should form a KWSN team there to prevent someone else from preempting it.

Hope you don't mind but I just created a team there.
No plans on doing any crunching though - not that I can. upload/download server isn't working _________________

Not to worry, i got like 9 credits and then detached from the project. Just added myself to the team so we could say we tried it. Although at this point it won't even show on the stats because the admins have not made the required files public so people like Bok can add them to stats sites _________________

Is this kinda like Majestic 12, but for BOINC? What's the deal?
As for RADIOACTIVE@home, I grow tired of WUs and no credits...

For Radioactive@Home you only get credit two ways. You detect radiation. Or you someone grunt force the WU back and getting credit.
I do not suggest the second way it is not fun.

You know, that's my thinking... And I'm one who's actually looking to take a degree I currently have in computer networking, and move towards a bachelors in computer security, with a masters in homeland security if I can get the money together.
But lets be honest, Osama Bin Laden is a person of interest, the Jones down the street really aren't. Eh, just because one could find the bra size of the girl next door, doesn't mean one should really go all James Bond on her, all joking aside
This project just seems to have a certain element of the creep factor involved, and would not be the reason I'd even be considering such a possible career. I mean, honestly, what exactly would we be protecting if we started crunching serveilance data, on well everyone. Pass....
Now, have a known bomber, who's planning on planting a bomb on a bus full of kids, and I wouldn't mind helping to get the info needed to save the kids lives. But put some poor bloke under the microscope who's just minding hteir own business, eh.... There is such a thing as ethics and decency still... _________________

It's as bad as the ones generating rainbow tables for password hacking. _________________
