|
|
By a wide margin, the GPU Project of the Month of March is POEM.
Quote: | Protein Optimization with Energy Methods
Proteins are the nanoscale machinery of all the known cellular life. Amazingly, these large biomolecules with up to 100,000 atoms fold into unique three-dimensional shapes in which they function. These functions include all cellular chemistry (metabolism), energy conversion (photosynthesis) and transport (oxygen transport), signal processing in the brain (neurons), immune response and many others, often with an efficiency unmatched by any man-made process. Protein malfunction is often related to diseases and thousands disease-related proteins have been identified to date, many with still unknown structure. To understand, control or even design proteins we need to study protein structure, which is experimentally much harder to obtain than the information about the chemical composition (sequence) of a specific protein.
By joining this project you will contribute to a computational approach to
* predict the biologically active structure of proteins
* understand the signal-processing mechanisms when the proteins interact with one another
* understand diseases related to protein malfunction or aggregation
* develop new drugs on the basis of the three-dimensions structure of biologically important proteins.
POEM@HOME implements a novel approach to understand these aspects of protein structure, which lends itself very well to worldwide distributed computing. The scientific approach behind POEM@HOME is a computational realization of the thermodynamic hypothesis that won C. B. Anfinsen the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1972.

Please be patient, this project may have a rough start for several reasons. Remember we're jumping in early, the GPU apps have been active for only about two months.
First, is a lack of WU's at the moment - although there are plenty for CPU, there are none for GPU. KWSN will shrub them when they come!
Second, see tech details posted by stooper101 below. However, looks like there is an NVidia app for Linux, please verify.
http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/apps.php
Quote: | Remember that even though it is an OpenCL app, that it is only up for ATI cards. The app works best if you leave a cpu core open and even force two or more WUs to process at a time. This can be accomplished with a app_info file. Even with two WUs and one core open, I am only getting 30-40% gpu utilization. GPU work is definitely not up for prime time yet. You need to work at it to get things going. |
Third, there has been some controversy about credit overgranting and cheating. I believe this is limited to one account and has been resolved.
Quote: | Switching to fixed credits
As we discovered an overgranting for our resent workunits, we decided to change our credit system to fixed credits on Monday. (2/12/12) All overestimated credit points will be normalized.
We apologize for the trouble caused.
The credits will be set as follows:
firstdrug: 80.8275865915366
gpucrystal: 2925.23047140266
rigiddock: 113.608330044946
barrelcompare: 20.6341535290809
|
Clean up work is ongoing, see gory details here:

User pepita on Team Nordlichter just got nailed with -43 million points.

Trying to be patient, but this PotM may be a FAIL? Has anyone shrubbed a single GPU WU yet? Looks like 3 are supposedly available? |

Besides having an AMD GPU capable of doing OpenCL and besides upgrading boinc to 7.x.x, you need to have a little luck and a somewhat aggressive stance on requesting work. In the later 7 series of boinc, there is an option under network usage. Minimum work buffer and max additional work buffer. 0 means it will only ask when you are empty, I have mine set at 1 day and 1.5 days. (That really gets you a lot of Correlizer) I have also chosen to run two Poem units at once while giving one CPU core to Poem GPU. I get this done by way of an app_info file. Below is what I'm using. Don't know if it's the best way, but it seems to work for me.
Code: |
<app_info>
<app>
<name>poemcl</name>
<user_friendly_name>POEM++ OpenCL</user_friendly_name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>poemcl_0.1_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati_100</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>poemcl</app_name>
<version_num>1</version_num>
<plan_class>opencl_ati_100</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>0.5</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>0.5</max_ncpus>
<flops>2.1e10</flops>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>0.5</count>
</coproc>
<cmdline></cmdline>
<file_ref>
<file_name>poemcl_0.1_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati_100</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info> |

POEM was a very strange PotM, production actually went down? Was it lack of work, quirks with the GPU client, plus other factors?
Final POEM Statistics:
34th Place +1
27,978,878 Total points +7,597,766
228,639 22nd Place +85,401 and 12 places
7,202,378 points shrubbed last 28 days = 4,311,099 LESS than the previous 28?
151,293 crunched yesterday = 647,076 LESS than at the beginning of the month?
33rd Place Formula Boinc +3
Milestones:
Sir Stooper 12,000,000
williamd007 passed 450,000
Sir Mifun Fat in a Right Place 40,000
KWSNi! - MadRussian passed 9,000
Mike passes 6,000
