None of these projects have been PotM. Note one project is non-Boinc, but is part of the DC-Vault. Vacation = no PotM, apply full computing power to your pet projects. We added a few new projects this month to keep things interesting...
Rank *
Note a couple of projects have * next to the rank, meaning we are in danger of dropping a spot soon...
X SETI Factor
This is a multiplier for the number of points the project should earn compared to SETI according to BoincStats. (Changed from Prime Grid this month since that project is primarily GPU now.)
Stomp Rating
My subjective rating of the number of teams we could stomp during the month.
Zero = We're solid, but probably can't move up.
Low = We might move up 1 or 2 places with some luck.
Medium = We could move up say 3 to 5 places.
High = We should stomp a bunch of teams on this project! |

I haven't been into the Boinc PotM thing until just recently, but I think we should reconsider the way these PotM votes are held.
For a guy with no Nvidia cards and mostly Linux boxes, there is no point in running Einstein or Milky Way since those are GPU and Windows only (for MW) projects. Collatz is pretty much the only project that runs without problems on a Linux64/ATI platform.
Can we keep a separate PotM vote for GPU projects instead? I wouldn't waste CPU on a GPU project if that becomes a PotM. _________________

I personally have sat out of more than I have participated in because, Well to be honest, they are not very exciting....

I haven't been able to figure out what to do with the CPU/GPU divide, partly because I don't own a GPU and don't have a feel for the situation. So I guess we need advice from the GPU experts - would separate votes for GPU and CPU projects work? Frankly I suspect that GPU projects should be taken out of PotM - I'm assuming that GPU'ers have a pet project or two that run best on their card, and the GPU will continue to crunch those projects regardless of any vote? Or if a GPU project wins PotM, we could use the next highest vote count CPU project as an alternative for those who don't own a video card? It doesn't seem worthwhile expending CPU electricity on a project where a video card will generate 50X the results. Again, need advice on this...
As to taunting, perhaps we could come up with a Taunt Index Rating (Tm) for each project? Or perhaps we transform PotM once every few months into a vote on which team/project we'd most like to taunt? Not sure how that would work, need advice on this too, but could be exciting.
Too late for next month, but we can shake things up for February..... |

I agree that the GPU/CPU thing has always been kinda murky waters. As for me, for example, I like to run Milkyway but only have one card that can run that. So I set the 4770 to run Milky primarily and the 5770 has switched between Collatz, RC5-72, DNETC and now Primegrid. As you can see, this limits me from participating in any CUDA projects. So, my votes generally tend toward voting just CPU reserving my GPU to shrub away at whatever floats my boat for the month. Now, if a PotM happens to fall on a GPU type project, I've often tried to configure something that works best for the team. Mind you, this is my particular set-up and everybody else has different abilities in the GPU department.
I think it would be a good idea to select a list of projects each month that can be run by the greatest amount of people. That seems to fall into the CPU department. But we have to remember that certain projects work better/worse with Linux and certain projects may benefit from 64 bit. So there is no easy answer.
As for taunting, excellent idea! When I joined, I'd heard stories and whispers of the legends that were the KWSN taunts. This is definitely a tradition I would enjoy seeing return. _________________
