Due to shenanigans after the polls had closed, a tie breaker vote made RC5-72 the Project Of The Month.

RC5-72 is attempting to break encryption on a 72 bit key. 56 and 64 bit keys have previously been solved, but this one is much more difficult.

Project home page:
http://www.distributed.net/RC5/en

There is $10K in prize money involved, which will be distributed as described here:
http://stats.distributed.net/misc/money.php?project_id=8

John Galt 007 provided the following info in the voting thread. Please feel free to add to it, I think this project will require more tech advice than usual...

These were found here: http://www.distributed.net/Download_clients

Run the client to set up an account, and after you finish 1 workunit, flush your work and quit the client.

After your stats show up, usually after 1 day, join the kNIghts team, found here: http://stats.distributed.net/team/tmsummary.php?project_id=8&team=3706

See the separate downloads for the GPU clients above. They all run as portable applications, you can run them right from a flash drive.

Would pay for ~3-4 months of electricity the computers use. Rolling Eyes

In the settings menu, that you have to go through with 1-9 keys there are options for which projects you receive and in what order it checks for them..it comes default to check for og first, but you can change it to not get them at all tho. I will try to find where I did it so i can explain that where it makes more sense.

**Go to Client> Configure>2) Buffer and Buffer Update Options> 9) Load-work precedence> (it explains it on this screen also) then change your settings to have RC5-72 first, or simply put "=0" after OGR-NG

That's all i've really figured out in the settings so far. Anyone see a way to set it to only use a certain amount of the cpu? not a huge concern but I dont have my new cpu cooler in yet so Im watching it closely

That's right, under
Load-work precedence:

Just add "=0" after OGR-NG on the New Setting line and hit enter
Default Setting: OGR-NG,RC5-72
Current Setting: OGR-NG,RC5-72
New Setting --> OGR-NG=0,RC5-72

I don't see a setting to limit CPU use. You might want to use the screensaver so you can pause it for a few minutes every time you mouse or hit a key, or train your cat to do it.

My new cooler is coming in tomorrow *hopefully* so I'm gonna turn my cpu off for tonight and let it cool back down. Still have my gpu pumping strong though, that 5870 has one heck of a fan =P

Amazing how difficult these things are to crack. The project has been running for 7.8 years, has checked 50.5 quintillion keys at a rate of 204 billion keys per second (1.2 trillion keys/second yesterday), but it is only 1.07% complete! (Although I still think the NSA could do it in about 12 hours. Shocked ) This is evidence for the strong security of current 128 and 256 bit encryption...

Here's something that has been bugging me, and now that we have this project spotlighted it may be a good time to try and figure it out... The only place I can find that displays stats for this project other than itself is Free-DC. But there becomes a problem when you try to add it to your 'stats page' and therefore add it to your signature image. The darn thing keeps getting mucked up by the quotes in our team name. I've asked Bok at Free-DC and he looked into it a little along with another one of the stats maintainers, and they were able to get it working for about a day on my account, but it was soon lost as soon as I updated something else.

So here's a possible solution (don't even know if it is possible): get our team name changed to remove the quotes. I asked the folks at distributed.net and they asked if I tried contacting our team founder 'Necroscope'. This is were I get stuck, as it seems Necroscope is no longer on our team. Anybody know of him/her? Am I making a mountain out of a molehill?

You can't set cpu percentage for use, but if you are running a multi-core, you can tell it how many cores to use.

I don't get along very well with command line clients. Need super-detailed instructions on how to determine when stats show up, how to join the team, etc.... Sorry...

We have already moved up two places! Our production rate almost tripled to 71K yesterday, enough to put us into 13th place.

Gentlemen,

This dnet team is many many years old (I'm sure I've been a member since before some wars). My guess is that the leader has long since retired that bigfoot account.

Anyhoo, I'm going to put a few cores back on this project for a while so the AMD-64/FreeBSD stats should start rising from tomorrow; not sure how many yet, will have to see how they impact performance, probably somewhere between 18-24 for now - and better still it'll not affect my boinc stats as I can use machines I'm not running boinc on.

Ni!
