Martin Gardner, a mathematician I have admired for almost as long as I can remember, has passed. More here: http://www.theness.com/neurologicablog/?p=1974
He remained active even in his retirement, and has made some recent contributions at Improbable.com (a site I may have linked to once or twice).

In The New York Review of Books in 1982, Stephen Jay Gould, the evolutionary biologist, called Mr. Gardner “the single brightest beacon defending rationality and good science against the mysticism and anti-intellectualism that surround us.” |
