It appears to work. I got my official version today (I was sick and tired of fighting with XP X64 Edition- too many driver issues). The install (clean) was fairly painless (about 1/2 hour, followed by 3 1/2 hours installing my usually programs, moving my email, setting up an XP Virtual Machine (included with Win 7 Pro)).
Boinc is running, and to my surprise, BoincView even still works!
Aero will take some getting used to, I'm still not sure if I like it or not.

Very Happy

You can turn Aero off if you want. I did on my work machine so that the GPUs could crunch while I worked without it being overly noticable.

I've been running Win 7 on every machine I own and work with for months and it's way better than XP or Vista. Also crunching GPU and CPU projects with no drama now that the BOINC Manager supports the new drivers properly.

I know I can turn it off, I just haven't decided if I want to yet. With my graphics card and CPU, the system doesn't seem to drag (Radeon 5750 with a Q6600). The XP mode dragged until I bumped it's memory up to 1 GB- it's better now. The next trick is seeing if I can get a copy of Win2K to run (even if I have to install VMWare Player also) as I still have some stuff I support that will not run under XP.

PS- Since you've been running it- A question. I have 4 GB of ram with a 2 GB flash drive as ReadyBoost, will a bigger flash drive help at all?

I dunno, I've never bothered. I run 4 GB at home and it's been fine, so I imagine the extra is helping some but I don't know what more would do honestly.

I'm moving from Vista 32 to Win 7 64 shortly. How do folks determine those detailed Boinc benchmarks such as X.XX points per minute or hour? I'm thinking about checking that to see if there's any improvement.

I have 3Gb memory, but it never seems to fill above 50%, so would powerboost do anything?

It always does something because the system moves swap to it, while it otherwise sits on your hard drive regardless of how much RAM you have. How much is debatable.

As for performance increases going from Vista 32 to Win7 64, that will depend entirely on the project. Unless they've got a native 64 bit application you won't see any change at all. While others, like Collatz, run twice as fast in 64 bit because the 32 bit client has to do twice the work.

Going from 32 to 64 will have zero impact on your RAM at 3 GB. It will, however, let you upgrade to more if/when you decide to.

Just a follow-up on the Windoze 7 Experience: #Mad

1) I am having problems with large file transfers (copies to another machine). If I try to do a copy of a file > 3 GB to my server, about 1/2 the time it chokes and locks up. I have turned on Jumbo Frames, so I will see if that helps. (It is odd, the Windoze back-up program does not have this problem, it is only a copy from Exploder that screws up). Confused

2) Turned off Aero- the "Eye Candy" is more distracting than anything else, and does not have any "up-side" to running. Confused

3) Boinc benchmarks for an Intel Q6600 dropped from 10.5 GFlops to 9.0 GFlops- a 15% loss. What the ??????????. Lets see if that is better with Aero off- Nope. Looks like I will have to look into that. My stand-alone benchmark program agrees- Windows 7 SVcks! Crying or Very sad

It's not. Not in my own personal experience, and not in any review I've read.

Most stuff shows no difference. Some apps faster, some slower, that's drivers. Network performance is way up.

If you get good performance from XP 64, run it. Most people can't get it to run at all because driver support is worse than Vistas ever was. If you're happy running an 8 year old OS that they're dropping from the patch routine in a year, more power to you.

Only if it was HTML, which it wasn't. It was the expression of an action. What are you, the IE parse engine? Laughing

Ok,

For the windows junkies on here.

I've been shopping around for a new laptop. Was thinking of a nice gateway but am now settling on a custom sony. It will be primarily for games and homework while at work on graveyard shifts. If I get windows 7 pro it comes without all the crapware installed. Is there any significant difference between pro and ultimate to make it worthwhile or is pro more than adequate? Only difference I saw on the microsoft site was that pro doesn't have bitlocker which I remember reading about a while back and not wanting. What are the other differences if any?

The only other feature they advertise is Multi-language support.
Note: XP Mode is nice(I have VS 6.0 and some PLC/SCADA stuff installed there), but slow unless VM is increased from stock value.

As a note (almost identical H/W) :
Windows 7 Pro X86, NFS, Intel Q6600, 4 GB Ram, 2 GB ReadyBoost= 4,054/Day
Linux X86_64, NFS, Intel Q6600, 3 GB Ram= 4,946/Day

If I use it to shrub I'll set it up to dual boot. This will mostly be a game machine though which means I'm stuck with windows for when the urge hits. Thanks for the info!
