For all of you Linux lovers, I need some help getting DIMES to work on Xubuntu 64. I recently added Xubuntu 64 to a XP-32 box running on an Athlon 64x2 4200+. I like the capabilities of 64 bit shrubbing, but it would be nice to be able to run Dimes alongside. My only problem, is that I know little to nothing about Linux.

Dimes is a 32 bit program that I am able to run on Vista 64, but when I try to run it on Xubuntu I get an error - wrong architecture i386. I've read that you can get 32 bit libraries, but either I did it wrong or I just don't know how to do it.

Anybody running Dimes on 64 bit Linux? Any tips for a Linux noobie?

Open up your package manager and do a search for ia32. These are the 32 bit compatibility libraries for 64 bit linux. They should eliminate your problem.

edit
I did run dimes for a while on 64-bit linux, and these are what I needed.

I found and installed a few different ia32 packages. One being the libraries and the others being some sort of detection and what-not. Still no love. Do you think it has something to do with xubuntu being so stream-lined? Maybe it would be better if I went ubuntu.

I doubt it's a distro issue, dimes does require the jre to be installed which I don't know if xubuntu installs by default. The dimes version version I used is also gone, so I may have to play with the new one when I get home later.

for the java check out http://www.netdimes.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=284

Make sure that "make" is installed as well.

make sure to chmod the dimes directory to 777 (This is one of the things I don't like which is why I don't run it)

It also has to be run as root (Another thing I don't like)

I'll post again after I've had a chance to run through it.[/code]

Bah, it's getting to be a little too much work. I have it running on my Vista box and a friend of mine allowed me to run it on his XP box. That's good enough for now.

Unless it boils down to a simple fix, I'll live with what I got.

Thanks for trying Yankton.

I'll let you know if it turns out simple. Netdimes doesn't distribute binaries for linux and they don't post instructions for what they do have, so it's not exactly a user friendly project.

Happy Shrubbing!

If you are running Linux as a dual boot, as with WUBI, Dimes won't work. For some reason, it won't allow pings to get thru...

I tried it a while ago with the help of Yankton, and it is a no go...

Did you ever try manually pinging from the install or seeing if the firewall had it blocked?

I didn't get to play with it yesterday, got instead to play with someone's fried power supply. parts on order. wheeee =)

I gave up on that...I only use Linux for PG challenges now that have a 64bit advantage. At the time I was going for #1 at ABC, and there is an advantage there for 64bit as well...

Good luck on the PSU...if you need a small one (~300 watts or so) I have some spares that I will let go for $5 plus shipping...

They already ordered an antec unit. Newegg is awesome. I'll install it for them when it shows up. I am thinking of replacing an existing one on one of my systems with something beefier so I can add in a nice graphics card.
