Co-Knights,

My question:
I would lik to add a gforce 9600 to my system.
However, my system already has a on-board vga interface recognized by boinc as a cuda device but incredibely slow.

Can i add the new gpu to the system and somhow select which one to use in boinc. This would enable me to keep using the on-board gpa for my monitor. Or do i have to disable the on-board gpu?

I'm sure you knights shall give me a hasty reply!

Li,

Erland.

Your on board will not do Cuda your 9600 should be able to run it.

You should disable your onboard graphics in Bios, and just suspend GpuGrid when you do something graphics intensive....

http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=867#7753
This is a list of compatible cards and chips.....

#ni-1

Remember that a 9600 will also be "slow". I run 2-8800's and 3-9800's they have 112 to 128 stream processors.
a 9600 has between 48 and 96 stream processors, you may want to get at least a 9800 if you haven't yet purchased it....

Try to get a GTX 260 instead if you can. On the PSU issue, I've been running my i7 with a Corsair 650W and it handles two 260's and a 9600 just fine.

You should run a couple of benchmark/diagnostic programs on the card. It could be a bad one.

http://www.futuremark.com/

Edit: Don't forget to Dl EVGA precision so you can run up your fan speed...
Otherwise your card will fry......

You might want to post this over in the GPUGrid user forums. Did you upgrade to the 185.xx driver?

Yes i did, and later even to 190.xx.

The crazy (or lucky) thing is i have it with aqua also. What's great on aqua is that it only takes seconds to ruin 3 WU's where it takes hours with gpugrid.

With Aqua i had the same problem on the same system. Aqua works on my 8200 of my other linux system, i think i'm going to try to put the gpu in the other system today.

Li,
Erland.

It seems i have sorted it out.
I looked some more into the forum of gpugrid and found that there are issues with the 185.xx and 190.xx drivers.
I reverted to the 180.xx driver and at the moment aqua seems to be running without error. After completion of the first wu i'll switch gpugrid back on.

I'll keep you guy's posted.

Li,
Erland.

Ok, 3 WU's of aqua crunched without problems, 15 credit Wink

I started GPU grid and am at 14.5 % at the moment, i'm going to enable the 4th core for cpu crunching again.

Erland.

IMNSHO, Coolmax PSUs suck. My supposed 500W Coolmax PSU was causing all sorts of problems with my main (Opty) shrubber, until I figured out it had a droopy 12V line. I replaced it with a much lower-rated Thermaltake I had laying around, and it's run fine for months.

I have one machine with a Coolmax 600 that's been solid for over a year. Maybe it's just the 500's.
