It's not often we get loads of snow here in the UK but today's an exception.
I can't recall them ever cancelling all buses across London because of treacherous road conditions

We've got a few inches (*), but I don't know what all of the fuss is about.
Mind you, cat refused to go outside with more vehemence than when we take him to the vets.
Threw some food out for the birds, but they don't seem to be able to cope with the concept of their legs sinking into the surface. Guess they are genuinely British...
Main roads were clear and drive to work was much easier than usual (apart from a couple of other vehicles that refused to go more than 5 mph ).
Edit: (*) Measured it outside now and it is less then 3" deep!
Hasn't stopped the boss from closing early "so people can get home safely" _________________ (Sir Furry - Occasional member of the Migratory Coconuts)

It seems you British can not handle a little of the white powdery stuff on the ground.

You call that snow... Sheesh we've already had 54 inches of the white annoying stuff, my snow blower broke, apparently it didn't like the volley ball hiding under the fresh 8+ inches we got a week ago. So now i'm on my second try of finding an epoxy or something to hold the auger housing back together. Its not a fun feeling when your 5' 9" and the snow banks at the end of your driveway are taller than you and you can't see over them. I still have a month of snow to go so it might get deeper yet, hell the ground hog won't see his shaddow because he's under 3 feet of snow. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

Here in NYC we are predicted to get up to 3 inches of snow tonight into tomorrow. People are unhappy because of the mess it will make. It won't even slow the city down. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

... another couple of inches of snow again here and chaos ensues once more.
Our problem is that we are not prepared to invest large amounts of money to prepare for something that only occurs for a few days every ten to twenty years.
One of our younger staff members crashed his car today. No training on these driving conditions. (He wasn't even born the last time we had this much snow... )
I can remember the Winter of 62/63 with 30 foot snowdrifts at the back of the house, driving on frozen lakes and seeing the sea frozen over.
If that happened now the country would grind to a complete halt.

Snow? SNOW?
You lucky lucky bastards!
Down here in the colonies, we dream of snow.....
Cool, and white, and cool.... and cool..... so coooool, and so whiiiite.
Here today it was a balmy 42 degrees......
BLOODY CELSIUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's over 107 F.
It all started back on Jan 26, a nice sunny day, top temp of 37.2c or just 99F. Typical summers day for us in this part of Australia.
27th? Warmed up a bit, 40.0c or 104f
28th, 44.2c or almost 113f, geez it's a bit hot mate
29th, 44.4c, 113f, hot again today
30th, 45.2c or 113.4f. A bit warmer today.....
31st, 45.1c. Down 0.1c on yesterday. I didn't notice......
Feb 1. A new month. Down to 42.3c AND IT FELT COOLER!!
Feb 2 & 3. A genuine cool change. Down to 37c/99f. Bliss.....
Feb 4. 39.8c/103.6f. Warming up again
Feb 5. 42.5c/108.5f. A bit hot again.....
Feb 6. Only 41 today. This is easy.
Feb 7. Prediction is 45~47c. 47c is 116.6f. With VERY strong winds and a dust storm predicted. I think this will be a foretaste of Hell
Feb 8. Predicted top of 28c/82f. Anyone got a furry hat, coat, and gloves I can borrow??
Snow? Don't talk to me about bloody snow!
Anyway,
(The shrubber hasn't died in the heat [yet] )

London is ground to a halt by 8 Inches of snow
Get used to it. With global warming, it will get colder at th epoles and you will start to get more snow much more often. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

That was Monday - CLICK HERE for today's stories...
Essentially, we rarely get snow, so most people don't have snow chains, all wheel drive vehicles, etc. and have never had to learn how to deal with treacherous surfaces, power outages, etc. let alone know how to make a proper snowball...
More road and pavement accidents around here today (including some quite nasty ones). Local councils have run out of grit and salt and the main mines don't have the ability to ramp up production, so looks like we will have to spend our depressed pounds buying it from the continent...

Touche!
However, I recall this storm:
26.9 inches in 24 hours!

Thank the heavens for my snowblower. I spent a good bit of time digging out of that one. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Good thing you don't live up here, cuz you'd really dislike me.. Why you may ask? Cuz i'm the guy driving the snowplow with the big plow on the front. Always fun plowing and sanding 11 to 15% grades on the back roads. _________________ When in doubt, kick it until it works. |
