Our favorite gets a mention here:
http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/29/the-freak-est-links-181/

which links to here:

The point being, giving stuff away for free increased sales dramatically.

Good on 'em!

Along these lines, I did read somewhere that with all this kerfuffle over downloaded music, there is still not a great deal of evidence either way regarding sales.
There are claims that it can help boost sales because people will hear some of the music, like it, and then buy the cd or donate to the artist themselves as in a couple of bands who released whole albums free and then asked for voluntary donations. I think it was Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. Apparently, according to my son who claims to know everything, both bands did make more money that way than they would have by going the conventional route. Who knows.
It looks like the principle is working for the Python gang though! I'll be adding to my little collection as funds allow.

And now for something completely different...

And a little bit of trivia for Sir Furry regarding music and Hawkwind - Apparently they kicked Lemmy out because he was on the bad drugs and the rest of the band were on the good drugs ( Rolling Eyes drugs are drugs IMO). So Lemmy went off and started Motorhead which was named after a Hawkwind song. My son who knows all because he clicks on all the associated links on Wikipedia told me.
