The two pics on the bottom are of different heat sinks. Notice color and count of heat pipes. _________________

Either way....
How hot could a CPU be running that you need something that big? _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

One is the V-10 the other is the CES 2008

Do you Overclock your Penis? | I read that as "Overdock", which sent my mind down a different path altogether...

i7.... and there's me thinking you were an AMD fanboy for a moment there Sir Papa......
so which of these 3 are the best
£200 AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition
£225 Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 12M Cache S775 1333MHZ
£250 Intel Nehalem i7 920 S1366 2.66GHz
i know the i7's memory and mobos are more £££ as well does any one have any stock performace specs...
the 9550 does look appealing. _________________ Oh, it's blessed are the meek!, Well I'm glad they'll get something as they have a hell of a time!

Well, I won't be building Intel for a while. My next purchase will most likely be the 940 Deneb chip.
For me the i7 is too pricey in the cost/performance ratio. I would stick with the core 2 series for a while.
Btw: those CPU coolers work with all of those chips.... and the deneb pretty easily Oc's to 4+ Ghz _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

Last Friday I assembled my i7 build using the Asus P6TX58 Deluxe and the i7 920. The stupid thing wouldn't do the POST and after a couple of hours of testing one RAM stick at a time and trying to boot and checking it with one device at a time I (with the help of a nice tech guy on the phone) came to the conclusion that the board had a problem. It's a really nice board, but I wound up swapping it for the regular P6T and I'll give it another shot tomorrow.
On the subject of the heat sink, the one that comes with the i7 isn't nearly that big. _________________

Probably not, I also have a 9800 GX2 ready to drop in there.

Finally have my i7 up and running, but I wound up sending the 9800 GX2 back from whence it came. Right now it's running GPUGrid on a 9600 GSO a pulled from my HTPC since it had onboard video and SHA-1. The OS is XP Pro 64 and it has 6 GB DDR3-1600 RAM
Using Boinc 6.5 it runs 8 CPU WU's and 1 GPU WU at a time. The processing times are a bit of a surprise. The SHA's are taking 38-42 minutes each vs. 25-28 minutes on my 64 bit OS Quad Core. I suppose that's not too bad since it's not really 8 processing cores, but I hoped for a little better speed. If we ever stop using SHA as PoTM I'll probably switch it to Ubuntu 64 and maybe experiment with overclocking. _________________

You're right, as it's 4 cores which each have 2 virtual cores, so if it was only running 4 WUs of SHA, then it should be doing them in 19-21 minutes each, which is a nice improvement!
I remember reading somewhere too that instead of the flat 50/50 split the P4s had, the I7 can prioritize and split it's virtual cores processing power as needed, so one could run at 90% and the other at 10%. You should play with it a bit and let us know what it's capable of!

The first experiment didn't work quite like I hoped it would. Limiting Boinc to using four cores only cut the run time by about 1/3 instead of by 1/2. _________________

Does XP-64 have a utility that lets you see individual core utilization? If it does try it again and see what it changes. Maybe there's a maximum amount of each real core's processing power that it can send to each virtual core. Or maybe when it went to 4 cores, it went to 2 real cores having 4 virtual cores (I'm rambling - I know), or 3 real cores if you see where I'm going with this. _________________ Some days are worse than others. |

That's a good thought. I'll poke around and see what I can find. Thanks for the suggestion. _________________

It looks like the head of K9, Doctor Who's dog.
I like celery, it tastes fresh and cool and helps to clean teeth and it's great when making stock for soup or stews etc. _________________ |
