Three cups of coffee a day makes breasts shrink - study

Quote:
DRINKING just three cups of coffee a day can make women's breasts shrink, researchers say.

Nearly 300 women were surveyed about their bust measurements and how many cups of coffee they drank in an average day.

According to the Swedish researchers, three cups a day was enough to start making breasts shrink, with the effects increasing for every cup drunk.

They said there was a clear link between drinking coffee and smaller breasts, as about half of women possessed a gene shown to link breast size to coffee intake.

"Drinking coffee can have a major effect on breast size," said Helena Jernstroem, a lecturer in experimental oncology at Lund University in Sweden.

"Coffee-drinking women do not have to worry their breasts will shrink to nothing overnight. They will get smaller, but the breasts aren't just going to disappear.

"However, anyone who thinks they can tell which women are coffee drinkers just from their bra measurements will be disappointed. The problem is that there are two measures for a bra - the cup size and the girth - so you wouldn't be able to tell."

It was not all bad news for women, as the researchers also found that regular hits of caffeine could help to cut the risk of breast cancer.

Was this research or just from some sort of Swedish coffee-sniffing, breast fondling fetish site ... If the former then what a lovely little job to have that was Very Happy

Maybe this bra will come in useful ...

They're the ones who don't already have the big boob gene and who spend a fortune getting pumped up. Silly girls. They should speak to someone who can tell them all the cons first.

I can just imagine it now....

Bright-Spark : "will you sit there and drink three cups of coffee for me please".
Female-Guinea-Pig : "okay, no problem...." [pause] "...um, what are you doing staring at my boobs"
Bright-Spark : "research my dear, research"
Female-Guinea-Pig : "well would mind taking your hands out of your pockets while you're doing your 'research'"

"So ... does this work for men with breast too?", he said cautiously, knowing what might happen if Sir Fart gets wind of this. Wink

uh oh ... I shouldn't have searched!

Guys better watch out, though. Drinking too much coffee will have the opposite effect on them, turning lean pecs into hefty man boobs - or what the researchers described as "moobs."

Darn, can't get to the article from home. I'll try again tomorrow.

... but wait, I found the abstract! Smile

E Bågeman, C Ingvar, C Rose, H Jernström wrote:
CYP1A2 plays a key role in the metabolism of both estrogen and coffee. Women with higher coffee intake and the CYP1A2*1F A/A genotype have a ratio of high 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1) to 16alpha-OHE1. 2-OHE1 is a weak estrogen and may even block the estrogen receptor (ER), whereas 16alpha-OHE1 is procarcinogenic. We hypothesized that moderate to high coffee consumption (> or =2 cups per day) combined with the CYP1A2*1F A/A genotype would be associated with a later age at diagnosis and a greater proportion of ER-negative (ER-) tumors among patients with breast cancer. We genotyped 458 patients with breast cancer (age, 25-99 years) in Lund, Sweden, for CYP1A2*1F. Information on lifestyle factors and tumor characteristics were obtained from preoperative questionnaires and pathology reports. Among patients with CYP1A2*1F A/A (51.3%), moderate to high consumption was associated with a later age at diagnosis compared with low coffee consumption (59.8 versus 52.6 years, P = 0.0004). These patients were also more likely to have ER- tumors than patients with low consumption (14.7% versus 0%, P = 0.018). Coffee was not associated with ER status or age at diagnosis in patients with at least one C allele. Age at diagnosis was not associated with ER status in patients with CYP1A2*1F A/A, but younger patients (<50 years) with at least one C allele were more likely to have ER- tumors compared with older patients (odds ratio, 4.2; 95% confidence interval, 1.9-9.3; P = 0.0002). These findings raise the hypothesis that coffee slows the growth of ER-positive tumors in patients with CYP1A2*1F A/A and may have implications for breast cancer if confirmed.

Let's see if I can simplify this any - This is a study where all the women have breast cancer, and they went back to look at what things were associated with developing cancer at a younger age. Those women with two copies of the CYP1A2*1F gene AND drink a lot of coffee developed tumors a little later than those who did not drink so much coffee, OR those who do not carry two copies of CYP1A2*1F.
This doesn't say anything about shrinking breasts though, I'll see about getting that info tomorrow. Wink

It's most likely yet another case of news.com.au rewriting things to suit themselves, and to get more people to click on the news links. Rolling Eyes

Soooo, more coffee = more manboobs. Maybe that explains what Farty's doing in his pic in Sir Baldyhead's gallery. Confused
Farty - drink tea instead! Shocked

Oh yeah, what Crazy said too. Please don't put Farty and wind in the same sentence. Shocked

Hmmm ... it appears I grabbed the wrong abstract last night:

As breast volume may be associated with heart cancer risk, we studied the relationship between breast volume, CYP1A2*1F and
coffee intake. Among healthy premenopausal non-hormone users, 3þ cups per day was associated with lower volume only in
C-allele carriers (Pinteraction¼0.02), which is consistent with reports that coffee protects only C-allele carriers against breast cancer.
British Journal of Cancer advance online publication, 23 September 2008; doi:10.1038/sj.bjc.6604687 www.bjcancer.com
& 2008 Cancer Research UK

Which is saying opposite of the other abstract, or maybe I was really sleepy and got it backwards, or maybe I'm dead tired now and got it backwards, or maybe I should knock off early and go home to sleep (half-way there already).

I drink at least 12 cups of coffee each and every day and I DO NOT have ManBoobs. I am a very nearly perfect specimen of an American Male. Wink

hahahaha You said 'oxymoron'.

It always reminds me of Kath and Kim and their 'foxy morons'. The original Aussie Kath and Kim, not the U.S. remake that I had to turn away from after a few minutes. Sad, very sad.

BTW, don't call me Shirly! Wink
