Govert Schilling - Cosmic Cloud on Collision Course

SCIENCENOW 2008 Issue 111

"Smith's Cloud is speeding toward the Milky Way at more than half a million miles per hour (870,000 km/h) and will impact the galaxy in less than 40 million years "When it hits, it could set off a tremendous burst of star formation," Lockman said. Over a few million years, the impact zone will look like a celestial fireworks display, complete with many supernova "blockbusters." The team believes the cloud impact will occur about 90 ahead of the Sun and slightly farther away from the galaxy's center."

Good coverage here: http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=a&id=6476

"A new study of an unusual, elongated hydrogen cloud shows it's on a collision course with the Milky Way. "The leading edge of this cloud is already interacting with gas from our galaxy," said Felix "Jay" Lockman of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Green Bank, West Virginia."

Sir Farty, no doubt... Laughing

Give me 2 hours at Mama Rositas Bean Burrito all-you-can-eat Buffet Blowout on Wednesday night, shoot me up in the space shuttle (you won't need them pesky booster rockets), point my ass in the right direction and I'll make quick work of this Cool . Of course the shuttle may end up past Pluto by the time I finish, but that's ok cuz they got them there GPS units on that thing so we'll get 'er back Very Happy .

Why would you need a space shuttle? Just let 'er rip, and just put one hand on each cheek to steer yourself.

Going past Pluto is no problem, just as long as it doesn't go past Uran ... uh ... the seventh planet. Embarassed Razz #ni-1

The problem might well be breathing (and I'm not thinking about the lackof air)

Well, maybe we can't smell 'em, but they still singe nose-hairs, peel paint off of walls and act as an insect repellant...
But maybe I'm wrong... But then again, I'm not about to TRY to find out!!
