I signed up per a personal request form the Admins. Unsure how open they want a lot of people, but some of us can sneak in. I already created the team.
http://cpdnbeta.oerc.ox.ac.uk
The project will be running:
HADSM3 Mid-Holocene
The aim of this study is to place a paleo-constraint on climate sensitivity in the climateprediction.net ensemble. Sensitivity is here defined as the equilibrium temperature response to doubling of pre-industrial carbon dioxide concentrations. Some of the climateprediction.net models have shown a large sensitivity and by applying models to past climates, we are testing if the models and their corresponding sensitivity are realistic. The general circulation model results are compared to paleo-observations. We are aiming to provide a framework for the evaluation of the climate models to see if they are able to simulate climates that were different from today. This will improve our confidence in the models projections for future climates.
The period of focus is the mid-Holocene, i.e. ~6000 years before present (6kyBP). Why use the mid-Holocene climate to benchmark our models? The current climate is not in equilibrium. It is changing. The previous period in time with a stable climate was the mid-Holocene, when the climate was stable for a period of about 2000 years and the forcing on the climate is well known. The 6kyBP climate is reasonably well known through paleo- observations.
The model used is HadSM3, a state-of-the-art climate model from the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research Atmospheric General Circulation Model coupled to a slab ocean. Mid-Holocene boundary conditions are applied to the model, i.e. the orbital configuration is altered to represent that of 6000 years ago. This redistributes the latitudinal and seasonal distribution of incoming solar radiation at the top of the atmosphere in the model. The model you download consists of 4 different phases, each of 15 model years
* Calibration phase
* Control phase
* Mid-Holocene phase with altered boundary conditions
* A phase with a doubling of the pre-industrial CO2-levels to find the sensitivity
The difference in the model results between the mid-Holocene and control models are then compared to the paleo-observations available. A range of paleo-observations are used to test the models; pollen data, lake level data from lake sediment cores, macro fossil data and temperature data deduced from foraminifera, molluscs, diatoms, driftwood, whale fossils and whale bones.
The main researchers on this project are Helene Muri, Myles Allen, Hiro Yamazaki based at the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics department, Gideon Henderson at the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford and Paul Valdes at the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol. This work is funded by a UK Natural Environment Research Council studentship and Det Kongelige Selskap Norges Vel. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

If you can get some of us in that would be great, to conquer all projects.
I am in and have joined our KWSN team.

Looks like ~26 days on my P4 2.8G non-HT.
Not bad memory, either. 51M and 17M on the 2 programs running.
It's also been announced publicly, so I guess it's an open project. So come join. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

I'll be in as soon as the Spinhenge bash finishes.
and I'll add it to the Updater as soon as it shows up on Free-DC. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

Didn't CPDN already have a beta project? THis looks brand new with very few teams.

There was originally Climate Prediction Classic, then Climate Prediction Dot Net (CPDN, BOINC), then the BBC Climate Change Experiment (just about finished I think) and the Seasonal Attribution Project (not long left?). Now there's the brand new Climate Prediction Beta as well. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

With all the mess at Cosmo I decided to detach and let this run. It started last night at about 11pm local and it is now 7:45 am and I have now Errored out on 6 units and am waiting for another to error. I am done with this project. Thanks but no thanks....
Edit: the 7th one errored while typing the post. What a waste of power. _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

Well, I've signed up.
The search engine isn't very good. I searched under "Knight" and "Ni" and it couldn't find the team. Had to do it the hard way.
It's estimating just under 500hrs on my Athlon XP2800+ once it finally downloads.......it's being very slow on that front.
I'll run everything else dry first then crack on with this. _________________

Try searching for "The" next time, it seems to work pretty faultlessly.

We could do with a few more KWSN shrubbers on this one.
We're currently 6th thanks to a quick start, but a lot of the teams below us are adding machines and will start to catch up soon.
Just bear in mind that it's a fairly long-term project. I've put 2 3800x2s exclusively on it (4 shrubs at ~450 hours each) and in 9-10 days they've only got to 16-28% complete, so they'll take well over a month to finish. On the plus side I'm getting a couple of 90-odd point result trickles from each every day.

This project is now doing SPINUPS, which will take a LONG time on all machines. My C2D 2G shows 145 days to start.
If you are willing to do the long haul, please come join. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

CPDN Beta2 Needs new members announcement!
Just the text of the message, none of their links are included:
CPDN Beta2 project members are crunching 160-year spinup models of the HADCM type. They run very stably at about the same speed as HADCM models from the main CPDN project. The minimum specifications are listed here, though more than 256MB RAM would be preferable, and at least 1GB if the computer has Vista. A fairly fast computer running 24/7 could complete a spinup in about 3½ months. But there's no race to complete them. The first to finish will be used first and others will be used later. Spinups are available for Windows, Linux and Intel Mac.
CPDN Beta2 members have also started testing the first BOINC v.6-compliant version of HADSM3 slab models. HADAM3 and HADCM3 models will also need to be tested for BOINC6 compliancy very soon. The first BOINC6-compliant models are not yet running stably. Testers of these models will need to upgrade to BOINC6 and be prepared for model crashes, or to abort them if Tolu says so.
Tolu later expects to test sulphur slab models for a new experiment. So there's a lot of testing to be done.
Beta2 members can select the model types they want to run in their accounts.
Beta2 crunching earns credits at about the same rate as on the other CPDN projects. Beta2 credits will be transferred to our CPDN main project accounts and aggregated with our CPDN credits. This credit transfer has not yet been properly implemented. At present it only works erratically for some testers, so new members will need to be very patient. It may be some time before their testing credits appear on the BOINC stats sites.
Beta2 testers should refer to the CPDN README advice collections here, back up their BOINC folder contents regularly, read the Beta2 forum for news and developments, and post about problems on the Beta2 forum. New Beta2 testers should have previous experience of running CPDN models from the main project, BBC or SAP.
New members need to attach to Beta2 as a separate project through the BOINC manager Tools menu, enter http://cpdnbeta.oerc.ox.ac.uk/ when prompted, then join as a new member using the same email address as for CPDN. |

It's nice to see that our beta credits have now been aggregated into the main CPDN stats (at last, it was a long wait). The beta credits are now being updated again.
