Thought it was about time to put in a plea for a bit more kNi!ghtly involvement in the "nothing" projects. (Project links are in the daily update thread)

1. DIMES - Uses virtually no processor time and, although it needs a full-time internet connection, uses miniscule bandwidth. All it's doing is "Ping" and "Trace Route" (a few hundred bytes every 15 seconds or so) to map the internet, so the wider the geographical participation, the better. You need Java installed (you've probably already got it as part of your browser), and there's a Java Spy utility on the download page to check. The project goes tits-up fairly regularly, but don't fret - it'll get back to normal within a couple of days.

2. Hydrogen@home - Small and infrequent WUs; many error units (but they normally error in a few seconds, so almost no time wasted). KWSN are currently storming up the charts (albeit at a snail's pace), but more help would be much appreciated.

3. Pirates - What self-respecting kNi!ght hasn't got this on all his shrubbers? Quite a lot, judging by our progress. Very infrequent, miniscule WUs (20 seconds, if you're lucky - an excellent day is to score over one Cobbly). With a bit of application, we can overtake Les Frogs; is there a better reason?. Attach all machines this instant - no excuses.

4. WhatPulse - A key-counter, again with virtually no effect on your "real" shrubbing. KWSN are languishing in the lower 200's, and I'm sure we could do much better. It counts keys hit, mouse clicks and distance mouse moved, although the rankings are by keys; if you do any typing at all, join this. You can set it to report at intervals (mine is set to every 12 hours), at a certain level (JerWA is set at 10,000 keys), or (like Cohiba) whenever you remember to send.

If you attach to all the above, I can unequivocably guarantee that they will not use more than 1% of your rescources, and probably a lot less.

There are also 3 projects doing absolutely no useful work, but which can be fun to run.

5. Second Computing - Very restricted 20 second WUs, converting text files to upper case (is there anything more useless?). BUT.... KWSN are at #5 in the World at this Loonie activity, and liable to drop into the mire shortly without more kNi!ghtly involvement. It's run by the University of Houston, so I would expect it to start doing something useful in the future.

6. VTU - The last time I looked (well over a year ago), this project was just there to teach an Eastern European gentleman*** how to program a BOINC project. I lost patience when pending took over 6 months to turn up, purely because the check WUs weren't sent out, but I suspect it's much better now. Again, KWSN are drifting in a downwards direction, but a very small amount of input can halt the slide.

7. Gerasim - This one is a Russian one-man show, set up in the hope of attracting some "real" work. He's re-written the BOINC website software (Gawd knows why, so it's not a standard BOINC site, although the software runs OK under BOINC Manager). There's not much shrubbing activity, so a small input can reap good place gains.

Expecting a massive surge in Team Member numbers -

#ni-1 #ni-1 #ni-1

*** I had a sudden fit of politeness.

Ok, Fine.....

I am already in Pirates, storming up the rankings with 6 credits this month.

I will attach Dimes and Hydrogen and on my remotes that I know people chat constantly I shall attach WhatPulse.

Are #'5,6 & 7 Vault projects?

Only DIMES (of the above) is a Vault project, and that's a long-term bet for place gains, but the Kows are less than a year behind, shrubbing at 3x our rate.

So, why didn't you link each of the projects? Now I have to dig if I am even a little bit interested.

I am in pirates, but haven't gotten any WUs for a while. I do recall that on Talk Like a Pirate Day last year they opened the flood gates.

Ni!

I found http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=index is a great place to find links and daily stats to all projects. Excellent resource and you don't have to search everywhere for project sites.

Did you install DIMES as a GUI or as a service - I've got all mine as a GUI only (uncheck the service box at install), as various ones seemed to drop into service mode occasionally and you can't see what's going on. It shows up in Task Manager as "javaw", if you need to see if it's running.

BTW, for maximum production (once you do get it running), go to Agent/Properties/Network and set "Time between measurements" to minimum (15 secs).

Yes, when I double click the icon it shows up as javaw for about 3 seconds and uses 11% of one core then it disappears.

You know.... I think it may be time for a fresh install of XP....

I am also having low on registry issues, That could be it Crying or Very sad

11% sounds extremely high - I don't think I've ever seen it over 1% (when it's communicating with base), and at 0% when running normally.

Possibly that's just Java initialising, then crapping out. #Mad

I've got one Vista shrubber that refuses to run DIMES, but all the XP and several other Vistas run perfectly OK. Confused

BTW, javaw is actually the java VM; and will also show up if other programs that use java (for instance Azureus) are running. So keep an eye out if something else is also using java.... The program might also have it's own process name, perhaps identifiable from some .exe in the install directory. Haven't looked at it specifically to say what it would be though.

Oh, and on hydrogen@home, if WUs are in short supply, they might not be looking to send invites out to new people. Depends if there's enough WUs for a few additional people, and the testers they have already. From look, it's in alpha stage though; and at some point should hit beta. When it hits beta phase, there might be a brief period for new accounts which opens up prior to going full public release. Perhaps a good idea if interested people keep an eye out to get signed up before some desired quorum is reached for beta testing.

Yes, it's what BelgianBeer@Home used, if memory serves; and I'm sure I've seen it somewhere else as well.

Be patient and they'll appear - it sometimes goes a month or so between batches, then they're all gone in a day or less. Progress in this project can be painfully slow, but all teams are in the same boat (or should that be galleon?).

Just leave it looking for work, and it'll build up enough long-term debt that it'll all be over in a flash; probably so quickly that you won't even notice the shrubs going through.

There was once, long ago in the mists of time, a fantastic rush of work which resulted in me shrubbing something like 50 Cobblies in a week!!! - Oh!, Fraptious Day Laughing Laughing
